Workshop participants will join two experienced natural builders in constructing a strawbale garden wall and cob meditation studio. The building site is located in the backyard behind a home-building project in a Downtown Durham neighborhood. This is an intensive, hands-on workshop, intended to give participants a thorough understanding of the materials and techniques of cob and strawbale construction. Partipicants will leave with the confidence to create their own home! In addition to building with cob and bales, we will cover making and applying earthen and lime plasters, integrating windows and doors into natural wall systems, and roofing the garden wall. Our schedule will also include discussions on design, siting, foundations, roof building (including living systems), and passive solar thinking.
Instructors are Greg Allen and Mike McDonough, alumni of the Cob Cottage Company’s 2008 apprenticeship program. They have years of experience working with natural materials and instructing workshops. They’re currently building a hybrid house (stick-framing, post-and-beam, strawbale, cob, earthen plaster, adobe floor, green roof, etc…) for Greg’s parents. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss, explore, and learn from this house during the week, while we work on the garden wall and meditation studio. Greg is documenting the house project (and other projects) on his blog at http://cobandon.blogspot.com/
The workshop will begin the morning of Sunday, June 17th. Participants are encouraged to arrive on site anytime before dinner on Saturday. Camping is available at the building site and three delicious, mostly vegetarian/vegan meals will be provided daily. The site is equipped with a kitchen, outhouse, low-tech outdoor shower, and fire pit. The workshop will conclude at the end of the following saturday, June 24th.
The cost of the workshop is $675, due by June 1st. There is a reduced cost of $600 for people who pay in full before April 15th.
