7-Day Cob + Straw Immersion

April 22, 2018 - April 28, 2018 Contact

Cost: $950

Additional Discount: 10% for family and friends participating together

You will leave this course ready to take on your own project. We will cover all of the aspects of natural construction with both hands-on learning and discussion, from foundation through roof. Our two spring 2018 immersion classes will focus on creating a kitchen building for our campus, so that it’s ready for our apprentice group to use in May. Our two fall 2018 immersion classes will construct a basic cabin, to host future students. With either project, expect to learn about:

  • how to choose a building site
  • executing a rubble trench foundation
  • building a foundation stem-wall to support a natural wall
  • mixing cob by foot
  • mixing cob by machine
  • applying, sculpting, and trimming cob
  • installing and modifying strawbales
  • how to incorporate proper details for long-lasting strawbale walls
  • thermal properties of cob and strawbale
  • pros and cons of both cob and strawbale
  • hybrid and other natural walls (“balecob”, slip-straw, wattle and daub, etc…)
  • mixing and applying natural lime and clay plasters
  • installing windows and doors
  • very basic wiring in natural walls
  • basic round pole framing
  • framing a simple roof
  • in-depth discussion of living roof installation (potential for hands on)

Three healthful, home-cooked meals are provided each day! You are encouraged to stay on campus all week, either tenting or renting a cottage. Sharing time in this community of people is a wonderful part of the workshop experience.
