Over the weekend, join us to build a completed cob oven. Earthen ovens are used to cook pizza, bread, meat, cookies, granola, roasted veggies, baked beans etc… anything that you could put in a conventional oven. And the flavor from the wood heat is incredible!
On Saturday, we will begin by finishing a simple stone foundation. By the end of Sunday, we will have completed the oven. In between, our hands-on work will cover:
- insulation layer atop the foundation
- thermal mass sub-floor
- fire brick floor
- sand form and thermal cob dome
- cutting the door and sculpting the doorway
- secondary insulative-dome
- plaster layer
On saturday evening, we will enjoy an “intro to natural building” slideshow presentation. We will also be touring all of the naturally-built cottages on our property, as well as our permitted strawbale home.
Your hard work will be rewarded with three delicious, wholesome meals per day. We source local, organic produce when possible, and emphasize whole, real foods. Mostly our cook will make vegetarian meals, with an occasional meat option. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated!
There is a hot shower available, and compost toilet facilities. Tent sites are available at no extra cost, and there are several earthen, one-room sleeping cottages available for rent ($10/night).
