Building with Earth & Straw Part 1: Insulating Straw Walls
April 21 - April 23 Contact
Part one in a 3-part series of hands-on workshops designed to introduce many of the skills, techniques and concepts necessary to build your beautiful, energy-efficient natural home. In this workshop we will construct straw bale and straw-clay walls in an actual building in progress. Both of these techniques are highly insulating, easy to learn, and appropriate in almost any climate. Lectures and slide presentations cover finding and testing clay soils, thermal properties of natural building materials, and passive solar home design. We will also learn to prepare and apply earthen base coat plasters.
Lead instructor Michael G. Smith has been teaching hands-on natural building workshops for 25 years. He has designed and/or built at least 50 natural buildings ranging in size from earthen ovens and composting toilets to a 3000 s.f. community house. He is the co-author of “The Hand-Sculpted House” and “The Art of Natural Building.”
Cost is $300 including delicious, locally-sourced, all-organic meals and on-site camping. $50 discount for full payment 30 days in advance or for family and friends registering together. $600 for all 3 workshops paid in advance.
