European Earth Building Intensive, FRANCE

July 26 @ 4:00 pm - August 5 @ 2:00 pm Contact

House Alive is pleased to be able to offer our world-class earth building training in Europe! This comprehensive workshop will introduce you to the wonders of building with earth. For millennia, people all over the world have used earth to build beautiful, simple, efficient and inexpensive homes. Earth is the perfect building material: it’s plentiful, versatile, and non-toxic. Plus, it can’t burn, won’t rot, and is easy to use.

In this workshop, you will learn how to build load-bearing earthen walls (cob), how to use earth and straw for infill in non-loadbearing walls (light-straw clay, wattle and daub, “torchis”), and how to mix and apply earthen finish plasters and floors. You will learn to identify, harvest and process the basic materials needed for earthen construction, and gain a real understanding of how these materials can be combined in different ways to achieve different results.

The primary building project of this workshop will be a small, multi-use structure that will eventually become an outdoor kitchen and storage area. Within this project you will have the opportunity to experience building in windows and doors, adding electricity and plumbing, and playing with sculptural features such as niches and arches. In addition, we will work on restoring the walls of a 300 year old farm house with a traditional earthen building technique known locally as “torchis.”

Please visit the House Alive website for a full description of this course, and instructions for how to register.
