Introduction to Tadelakt Workshop – Atlanta, Georgia

July 31, 2015 Contact

Date: July 31, 2015

Location: Cumming, Georgia. (North of the Atlanta Metro)

Join us for the Introduction to Tadelakt workshop this summer, and learn this rare lime finishing technique. Tadelakt originates from Morocco and was traditionally used in the palaces and bathhouses. It is a natural waterproof surface which makes is a good option for coating sinks, bathtubs, showers, backsplashes, and just for other decorative walls and surfaces.

We will be mixing and applying tadelakt finish onto tiles and onto cob in this workshop.  Though we will be working on small-scale projects, the workshop will give you the skills necessary for larger scale tadelakt projects as well.

What You Will Learn:

–          How to source the appropriate ingredients for tadelakt

–          What ratios to use for making lime tadelakt

–          How to properly mix ingredients and pigments

–          How to apply layers of lime plaster for tadelakt

–          How and when to polish the lime plaster

This is a rare and unique experience to learn the waterproof lime finishing technique. So far, this is the first opportunity in the southeast to learn this rare skill. This is also a great chance to come meet other people interested in natural building methods and to discuss your ideas.

The workshop will be held on a private property north of the Atlanta Metro area. It is also about an hour and a half drive from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for those interested in flying to the area.

We will begin the day with breakfast at 8:00 AM, and begin the lesson around 9:00 AM. We will break for lunch at noon and return to our project at about 1:00 PM. We will complete hands-on work around 5:00 PM. We will serve dinner at about 6:00 PM, and complete the day with a relaxing evening and free forum for natural building discussions.

The workshop will be led by Alex Sumerall, an east coast Natural Builder who has a focus on creating earthen structures that are healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and functional for modern life. He is the owner of This Cob House, LLC, which is dedicated to teaching people about cob and natural building techniques. Alex has a background in business and advertising, and has been practicing Natural Building since 2011. He graduated from the Aprovecho School of Natural Building in 2013 in Cottage Grove, Oregon, and continues to teach, present, consult, and construct.

There are two options for lodging: camping, or staying in one of the local hotel establishments.

Camping is FREE and is available right on the workshop property. There are plenty of great locations to set up a tent here. Campers will have access to clean bathrooms and showers.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served for the day of the workshop and are included in the price of the workshop.
