9a.m.- 6 p.m.
Join us for the last in a series of workshops to build “Querencia”, a strawbale/cob artist studio at Taproot Farm. A living roof is healthy and playful topping for our happy cottage.

A living roof, also called a green roof or a vegetated roof, describes a system that allows plants to thrive on the surface of a rooftop. The plants provide a net cooling effect in summer, while the soil provides some insulation and thermal mass, all making the building more energy efficient. The plants also absorb and filter rainwater, reducing the negetive impacts of excess storm runoff in watersheds. The type of system we will be installing is a shallow, or “extensive” system. The plants are chosen for their ability to thrive without watering or access to the groundwater table, so maintenance is minimal.

WORKSHOP FORMAT:
We will begin the morning of the workshop with a brief overview of living roof systems, the layer components, and plant selection. Everyone will then be invited to get hands-on experience installing the drainage layer, the soil medium, and the plants.

WORKSHOP COVERS:
* Overview of living roof systems, including installation details for small projects
* How to select appropriate plants and keep them healthy until they are established on the roof ecosystem
* Guided hands-on experience installing drainage layer, soil medium, and plants
