David here, we are announcing our 2011 schedule starting off with a 20 day owner builder cob/strawbale workshop at the New Jura Intentional Community in Waller, Texas.
We will be working on a cob/straw bale home, this will be utilizing both building techniques into one sustainable building. The first floor of the building is cob and the second is strawbale.
During the workshop we will teach you the fundamentals of building with cob and strawbale from foundation to finish, when you leave you will know everything needed to build your own cob or strawbale home.
Classes will be held daily with an off day around the 14th, at which time we will be offering a visit to the Animal Farm Center in Cat Springs Tx.
“Animal Farm was born of a desire to return to nature and stands as a glowing example of sustainable living.”
This is an intensive build so be prepared to get in and get dirty.
Accommodations during the workshop will be your own tent or RV, should you choose, there are hotel rooms nearby in the town of Hempstead. We are an off grid community and will not be able to offer power to your tent or RV, but will be able to offer cell phones and laptop charging. We DO have internet access available for campers.
We ask that you bring a new 6′x8′ tarpaulin to mix cob on, this will ensure that everyone will be able to learn how to mix. Bring clothes that you don’t mind getting very dirty as cob mixing will most assuredly do that.
Hot showers will be provided and composting toilets are also provided.
Early arrival is suggested to assure a nice spot close to the cob site, I would suggest a day before the workshop begins.
There is the opportunity for a couple of persons to possibly stay here and make this their home, if you are interested you can speak to me more about that through email or phone.
I will be offering work trade for this workshop and will limit 5 spots for this and you can read more about it in the worktraders tab above!
This workshop can be taken as one workshop or broken down into 2 separate workshops depending upon which building technique you would prefer to learn.
The fee for this event is $900 per Adult for the full 20 day workshop or $500 per Adult as 2 separate workshops. Taking the full 20 days gets you a $100 dollar discount.
Children are free to attend and we will have activities such as cob sculpturing and adobe brick making and natural earth painting with pigments, as well as 800 acres of nature!, we also have access to a private swimming pool.
We will be serving vegan/vegetarian friendly meals throughout the workshop, we do not eat nor serve meat meals and ask that if you eat meat then to please do so off site. (If you are a vegan, vegetarian or RAW food chef and interested in work trading for this workshop please contact me on email, The more the merrier).
We do ask for a food donation for children staying for the duration of the workshop and it is as follows:
20 days of meals:
$100 ~ 1 children
$140 ~ 2 children
$180 ~ 3 children
Since this is a bit harder to setup on PayPal, if you would supply the fee upon arrival it will be easier to handle.
Paypal payments can be made by clicking the link below.
Please visit the website and click the upcoming workshops tab at the top of the page and use the PayPal pay button inside the description.
If you cannot make a payment by PayPal then a cashiers check or cash is acceptable but must be paid in full (check clearing) before the workshop begins.
