BUILDING COB WALLS
During this part of the workshop we will learn how to build cob walls, and ‘learn by doing’ as we:

 - Choose materials and mix cob
 - Build w/ foot mixed & tractor cob
 - Trim & shape walls using a cob saw
 - Build and set lintels in cob over windows
 - Bury roof anchors & build cob up to beams

We will cover just about every aspect of building cob walls including, site selection and passive solar design, building your home on a solid foundation, sourcing materials for a good cob mix, setting windows and doors, and placing anchors in cob walls for the roof.

SCULPTURAL COB
During this part of the workshop we will learn how to sculpt and trim, as well as use cob to build furniture, including building a couch, a bench for a breakfast nook, & ‘learn by doing’ as we:

- Mix corbel cob and cantilever furniture seats
- Create sculptures in the walls
- Build window sills

NATURAL PLASTERS
Working with natural plasters is perhaps the most rewarding aspect of creating an earthen structure; the dessert after the main course of building with cob. We will explore and compare a variety of recipes.

LIME PLASTERS AND PAINTS
We will consider the advantages and challenges of using lime, and will work with natural mineral pigments to create various colors & effects.

EARTHEN FLOOR
As a special treat, we will combine pouring a natural earthen floor on the final day of the workshop. We will learn how to prepare materials, prep the building for the pouring the floor including setting up the frame, and see the final step to building with earth.

Join us for this seventh in a series of workshops to build “Querencia”, a strawbale/cob artist studio at Taproot Farm. Lime plastered-walls are healthy and beautiful- dancing with the reflected light. Querencia is a whimsical, earth-friendly oasis designed to nurture the inner “creative”.

Natural plasters provide non-toxic, inexpensive, and beautiful finishes that are durable and breathable. Lime plasters/stuccos are particularly suitable as exterior finishes or in wet areas, such as bathrooms. Lime surface have higher vapor permeability than concrete stucco and do not crack as readily, which makes them ideal for walls made of organic materials, such as wood or straw.

For 4 intense days we work with foundations, COB-building, clay- and limeplaster and cover.
You learn basic COB “with good boots and a tight hat”. Clay- and limeplaster. – when do you use which? You learn construction of foundation, building COB walls, design, decoration and much more.
In these workshops we build a garden wall, creating shelter and warmth in the garden, but the techniques you learn can be used for many other purposes as well. .
Price for one workshop: 2800 d.kr. including vegetarian food and teaching. Camping is free – a few rooms for rent.

Natural Building Weekend Workshops
Crow, OR (18 min from Eugene)

Aug. 14 & 15, 2010

The first weekend includes 2 full days of learning and developing Natural Building skills in a hands-on setting, working on a real building!

We will cover: -Structural cob and cob infill techniques
-Straw-flake infill for insulation
-Earthen architecture forms and details

Aug. 21 & 22, 2010

The second weekend can be taken alone but we highly recommend that you attend the first weekend session.

We will cover: -Earthen plasters
-Limewash finishes
-sculptural details

Cost for either workshop is $150, with a $50 discount if you take the first weekend class ($250 for both). Couples attending either/both classes will receive a %10 discount! There are 10 spaces available, please register by Aug 5th.

We provide: -tools and materials
-lunch on each day

Heating System – Rocket Stove & heat storage bench
During this part of the workshop we will learn how to make the most efficient mass wood fired heater you can imagine. And we’ll build the ‘battery’ to store the heat in too.
