Carmel Cob & Natural Building Intensive
July 20, 2016 - August 5, 2016 Contact
Join Muddbums in beautiful Carmel Valley, California for a 3 Week Natural Building Intensive.
We will be splitting up the course into three parts. Attendees are encouraged to sign up for all three portions, but due to the quickly approaching dates individuals are welcome to commit where their schedules allow.
The first 5 days (Wednesday, July 20th -Sunday, July, 24th) will be spent covering topics relating to:
Site design and orientation, rubble trench foundation w/ a stabilized earthbag stem wall, bonding earthen walls to foundations, interior and exterior stonework and mortaring, mixing and applying cob (and we mean LOTS of cob), trimming and shaping walls, installing a door and windows, along with work with recycled bottles and sculpting with cob, preparation of interior cob bench and an earthen platform for a mattress, and preparation and design of small interior wall partitions. Depending on group size, interest, and work rate more topics may be covered.
The second portion is 7 day volunteer based:
(there is no tuition fee for those who have signed up for at least one of the two workshop portions)
The property owners have offered to allow those interested to stay on site and continue work on the walls to assure we are up to level for the reciprocal roof install during the third portion of the build. While we understand and encourage time away from the worksite to explore the surrounding area we will require a minimum of four days (or achievement of desired preparation) of work during the seven day period between workshops, whichever comes first.
The final 5 days (Monday, August 1st – Friday, August 5th) will be spent covering topics relating to:
Roof support design and construction, mixing and application of (you guessed it!) MORE COB, bottle work and sculpting, finishing of the interior cob bench and bed platform, prepping interior and exterior walls for plaster, beginning application of earthen plaster base coat on walls, and discussion relating to application of finish plasters and stucco (exterior lime based plaster), preparation for and detailed description of an earthen floor installation. (While we would LOVE to involve a full out earthen floor install during this intensive we can give a .3% likelihood of that happening)
As you can imagine this is the true definition of an ‘intensive’. It will be fun, will be informative, it will be muddy, and the one guarantee we can make is that you WILL sleep like a baby. So cancel your July and August gym memberships and put that cash aside to help with tuition ?
