SUMMARY:The Art of Natural Plasters
DESCRIPTION:Delve into the world of natural plasters with two master craftspeople and teachers\, Athena Steen of the Canelo Project and Michael G. Smith of strawclaywood.com. Learn to beautify and protect natural wall systems such as straw bale or cob and also to “naturalize” your conventional home with a fireproof and health-enhancing earthen finish. Clay plasters can be surprisingly durable\, beautiful\, economical\, ecological\, and are the easiest material for novice plasterers to develop their application skills. Some of the things you will learn include:\n\n\n• Straw-clay sculpting plaster – good for sculpting and for thick protective plasters over vulnerable wall systems such as straw bale\n• Troweled clay/sand/straw plaster for exterior and interior finishes\n• Fine clay plaster with no straw for smooth finishes and wall carvings\n• Abstract sculpting and decorative carving designs\n• How to find\, test\, and ecologically harvest clay soil\n• How to select and use Japanese trowels and hawks\n• Surface preparation for plaster application over natural walls including straw bale\, straw-clay\, and cob\n• How to apply clay plasters over sheetrock\, painted walls\, wood and even concrete surfaces to “naturalize” a conventional home\n• How to develop and test your own earthen plaster recipes\n• Adding glue\, lime and other hardeners for exterior surfaces or wet situations\n• Mixing plasters by hand and by machine\n• How to design your home and select finishes for maximum durability\n\n…\n\nLocated 20 minutes from Willits in the heart of Mendocino County\, Abuela Gardens is a working demonstration site dedicated to helping the growth and healing of all beings through a continued dialogue with nature\, water\, food\, and medicine. This approach is accomplished by incorporating community\, music\, healing arts\, and silence within a multidimensional design strategy. Our action plan is to communally care for the Earth by growing as much of our own food and medicine as possible\, regenerating the forest and aquifer we depend on\, building with earth and regeneratively harvested materials as well as developing habitat for a diverse interface of wild and domestic creatures including bees and hummingbirds. This workshop will enhance the infrastructure of the center by constructing a focal point for meeting and eating as well as cold storage for seeds\, fermentations\, roots and other food.\n\n\n…\n\nThree meals a day will be prepared on site\, largely from local organic ingredients. Camping is also available on site. Access to the land is somewhat challenging due to our steep unpaved road. Participants will park nearby and be shuttled to the site. Guided morning yoga asana practice will be offered 2-3 times a week\, with space available for your own practice the remaining mornings.\n\n\n…\n\nRegister at https://www.abuelagardens.com/services.\nQuestions? email Blair at info@abuelagardens.com\n\n\n…\n\nInstructors:\nAthena Steen was one of the pioneers of the straw bale revival\, building her first straw bale home at the age of 19. In 1989\, with husband Bill\, she founded The Canelo Project\, a center for natural building and cultural revival in southern Arizona. Together they have developed many innovations in straw and clay construction\, ranging from simple straw bale pinning techniques to high-fiber “light adobes” to a revival of poured adobe floors. They emphasize everyone’s capacity to house themselves beautifully and inexpensively\, using local natural materials and innate wisdom. They have worked extensively on low-income husing projects in Mexico and traveled and taught all over the world. Athena and Bill have also written half a dozen books\, including “The Straw Bale House” (Chelsea Green\, 1994). Well known for her artistry with natural finishes\, Athena has collaborated on art museum installations at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. and several other museums. Learn more here: http://www.caneloproject.com\nMichael G. Smith co-founded the Cob Cottage Company\, along with Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley\, in Oregon in 1993. He helped organize the first Natural Building Colloquium in 1994. He wrote “The Cobber’s Companion” in 1996 and co-authored “The Hand-Sculpted House” (Chelsea Green\, 2002) and “The Art of Natural Building (2nd edition\, New Society\, 2015).” He has experience with a wide range of effective low-cost\, low-tech building techniques including cob\, straw bale\, and many lightweight natural infill systems. He has taught hundreds of hands-on natural building workshops\, ranging from one-day earthen oven builds for children to 12-week professional trainings. He enjoys consulting with owner builders to help them design and build successful energy-efficient natural homes. He is also on the Board of Directors of the nonprofit Cob Research Institute\, which wrote the first building code for cob in the world and successfully advocated for its adoption into the 2021 International Residential Code. With his partner and children\, he stewards a 20-acre organic farm in Yolo County. Learn more at strawclaywood.com.

SUMMARY:2-Day Hands-on Foundations
DESCRIPTION:$380 Early Bird Rate (register 30 days in advance) \n$420 Regular Rate \n5% discount for family + friends participating together! \n  \n\n\nDATES: This course is offered 2 times- April 2/3rd or April 15/16th \nMAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 12 \nINSTRUCTORS: Greg + Rebecca \nEven a well-built structure is only as durable as its foundation\, and foundations are challenging to repair later on. It’s really important to start with a good one! \nJoin us in constructing a start-to-finish foundation for a future cob building. We will begin with excavation\, end by installing a cob bond beam across the foundation\, and cover everything in between. \nFor this class\, we will primarily be using recycled concrete (referred to as “urbanite”) for our masonry material. Our foundation will have some curves to it (not rectilinear in shape)\, and will be split into three segments\, as a teaching tool. One section of the wall will be dry-laid urbanite. The second section will be urbanite laid in a cement-based mortar. The third will be a hybrid of poured concrete and stacked urbanite\, installed within a temporary wooden formwork. Learning here with urbanite will translate to using stone\, concrete block (CMUs)\, brick\, or poured concrete. We will also have a pile of natural stone available to stack\, for practice. Discussions will cover topics not explored through our hands-on work. \n  \n\n \nHANDS-ON TOPICS: \n* excavating for a building foundation \n* installing a rubble trench footing/drainage system \n* constructing 3 different styles of masonry stemwall (dry-laid\, mortared\, and formed) \n* practice stacking natural stone \n* mixing and installing a cob bond beam layer atop the stemwall \nDISCUSSION: \n* alternatives to the rubble trench footing\, and alternative stem-wall systems \n* how to transition from a foundation to various wall systems \n* we’ll also have a TOUR of existing foundations on our campus \n* slideshow presentation

SUMMARY:Intro to Earthen Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Dates: April 11 – April 15\, 2022 (YES. We are still having the workshop as scheduled.)\n \nLocation: Keystone Heights\, Florida \nCome and join us in Florida for our next Introduction to Earthen Building Workshop! We will be constructing a 6 foot tall rammed earth column\, building a cob bench\, and applying earth plaster to the cob cottage. A perfect class for beginners and experts alike! What makes this workshop unique is the opportunity to get hands-on experience with cob\, rammed earth\, and earthen plaster! You will get the knowledge to build earthen building projects scaling from smaller things\, such as cob ovens and benches\, up to large projects like homes and buildings. You will also get the opportunity to experience a completed cob building\, which was built on-site from previous workshop students. \nThis workshop is a great experience to learn how to build with rammed earth and cob\, and to get a broad learning overview of natural building techniques. You will get a solid foundation in earthen building fundamentals. We will be constructing an outdoor rammed earth courtyard\, and we will be studying Natural Building together each day. After this workshop\, you will have the basic know-how and confidence to design and build your own earthen constructions or buildings. \nHands-On Work Topics: \n– How to make cob (with the traditional tarp method and with a mortar mixer!) \n– Selecting and testing soils for cob and rammed earth (learn several ways to test your soil composition) \n– Building with rammed earth (we will be building a rammed earth 6 foot tall column) \n– How to build foundations (learn hands-on how to build concrete foundations for earthen walls) \n– Earthen and Lime Plaster (learn to mix and apply earthen plaster and lime plaster) \n– Basic carpentry skills (learn how to build rammed earth forms) \nClassroom and Discussion Topics: \n– Site selection and design (includes Passive Solar design principles) \n– Materials and tools (covers traditional and modern cob building toolset and materials) \n– Foundation Design (how to build strong foundations for heavy\, earthen walls) \n– Drainage principles (Important: water can be cob’s worst enemy) \n– Basic Electrical and Plumbing integration for cob homes \n– Installing windows and doors \n– Roofing and Bond Beams \n– Natural plasters and finishes (Vapor Permeable / “Breathable” finishes) \n– Overview of Natural Building materials \nThis workshop is a unique experience for people to learn about building earthen homes and to get an overview of Natural Building. Not only are there plenty of hands-on lessons to learn from\, but we will also have ample discussion and informal classroom time. Most earthen construction workshops don’t cover this many topics. But here\, you will learn all the core lessons needed to start building from this one workshop! \nPlus – there will be many hours of discussions about building cob homes and earthen building throughout the workshop. Its a great way to get your questions answered and brainstorm your building ideas! \nThe workshop will be held at a private property in Keystone Heights\, Florida. \nEach day will begin at 9:00 AM\, and the days will include hands-on building\, classroom sessions\, discussions\, and learning activities related to cob and natural building topics. We will break for lunch between 12:00 to 1:30 PM\, and we will complete each day at around 4:00 PM. They will be full-packed days! Worth your every penny! \nThe workshop will be taught by Alex Sumerall\, an east coast Earth Building Mason who has a focus on creating earthen structures that are healthy\, aesthetically pleasing\, and functional for modern life. He is the owner of This Cob House\, LLC\, which is dedicated to teaching people about cob and earthen building techniques. Alex has a background in business and advertising\, and has been practicing earthen building since 2011. He graduated from the Aprovecho School of Natural Building in 2013 in Cottage Grove\, Oregon\, and continues to teach\, present\, consult\, and construct. \nEarn A Certificate of Earthen Building!\n \nUpon completion of this workshop\, you will be awarded with a certificate of earthen building. This certificate is earned by all of our 5-day workshop students. It will be printed and signed by Alex for you to take home with you at the end of the week. \nFree Bonus! \nEveryone who signs up for the workshop will receive a printed copy of Alex’s book\, “Build a Cob House: A Step-By-Step Guide”\, and the downloadable PDF version\, FREE! We only make printed copies for workshop students\, so this is your chance to get one. We will be using the book as a lesson guide throughout the workshop too so you can follow along with your book in hand. \nListen to the great things that our workshop participants are saying! \n“The cob workshop was a life-changing experience. I learned a lot about natural building\, not only from Alex’s instruction\, experience and demonstrations\, but from interacting with people from different backgrounds who were a great source of collective knowledge. The hands-on experience was priceless!” Tony Romo\, Texas \n“The Cob Building Workshop was a great investment of my time! It was well organized\, extremely inspiring\, and FUN! Alex was able to explain construction basics to neophytes like me\, yet he could also answer the complex questions asked by the more experienced workshop attendees. I can’t wait until the next workshop!” \nMarybeth Babos\, Tennessee \nLodging \nThere are two options for lodging: free camping on site\, or making reservations at one of the local hotels or AirBnB. Hotels are available in the neighboring towns of Stark and Waldo\, per Google maps\, and possibly in Keystone Heights. \nCamping is FREE and is available throughout the property. There are plenty of great locations to set up a tent here. Multiple camp areas are available with oak trees shading the majority of the property. Trees can be used appropriately for hammocks & camp gear. Campers will have access to a clean bathroom and private outdoor shower. \nA modernized\, yet simple\, building contains a flushable toilet with a private outdoor shower that’s tucked away. It is spacious with room to keep things up and dry.\nOur location has electricity & water. Electric outlets are minimal\, with the ability to charge phones & power tools\, in a single location. The water is well water and is drinkable\, yet you may wish to bring your own. \nFood \nMeals will not be included in this workshop so participants will need to provide their own food. There are several local restaurants and grocery stores nearby the workshop site. \nEach is responsible for their own meal preparation\, unless decisions are made to share or combine. An hour for lunch is provided\, allowing adequate time for a quick nap\, a trip into town\, fast food\, cooking over the fire\, or utilizing the grill. There is no official kitchen on site\, but there is a small operational microwave\, and a few pieces of kitchen camp gear available for use. SUMMARY:Outdoor Wood-Fired Cooking Complex with Cob Oven & Rocket-Lorena Stove in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:This 3-week workshop offers students the opportunity to design and build a clay-based wood-fired cooking complex. Using locally sourced materials\, students will collaborate to create a traditional ‘beehive’ oven adjacent to a rocket – Lorena stove multi-surface cook top. A prep counter and earthen benches are included as well\, time and energy permitting. \n\nThis workshop is an opportunity to learn about the operational principles of wood-fired cooking\, both through the traditional oven\, and the rocket stove. Terribly practical and pan-applicable\, the skills acquired through this course provide you with relevant knowledge to cook efficiently and comfortably without the need for propane or electricity. \nThere will be ample time for sculpting\, artistic details and creativity\, as well as optional extracurricular activities in the evenings. \nBeginning with the foundation for the cooking complex and analysis and testing of soil\, this workshop gives students a secure understanding of cob building.  This is where the practical aspects of earthen construction begin. Students will familiarize themselves with the principles of insulation\, heat retention\, and draft\, knowledge that can be applied to most if not all earthen construction in general. \nPlease visit website for all the information and to register.  This will be a small personalized workshop and there are currently 6 spots open. Registration deadline is March 25th\, 2022 \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:VersaTerra 10-day Complete Cob & Natural Building Intensive
DESCRIPTION:VersaTerra 10 @ Be the Change Project \nReno\, NV \nNatural Building in the Urban/Suburban Setting \n\nDates: Monday\, 5/23/2022- Thursday\, 6/2/2022 (10 days)\nNumber of Students: up to 12\nCost: $1350\n\nThe Building Project \nDuring this ten day workshop we will build a beautiful earthen wall that will be part of a 200 square foot cabin and an earthen bread/pizza oven. We’ll also do interior plaster work on a conventional building. The cabin will be a future off-grid affordable rental unit. \n(We don’t start a whole building in a shorter workshop\, as attractive as that may sound; it will have people do too much of one thing [mixing cob and wall building] while not being able to learn the other important aspects of natural building in a meaningful way\, such as roof variations\, natural plasters\, earthen floors and design.) \nAbout the Site \nThe Be the Change Project is a Reno-based nonprofit\, centered on our half-acre urban homestead where we have offered classes\, tours\, and workshops since 2011. That year we were able to buy what was a run down and neglected house on a half-acre through fundraising and crowdfunding. Since then we have enjoyed living an alternative and off-the-grid lifestyle while transforming the property into a verdant oasis. It has become a center for neighborhood uplift as well as a model for simpler living in the urban/suburban context. We were a Mother Earth News Magazine Homestead of the Year in 2013. \nReno is in the high desert on the western edge of the Great Basin. The weather in May and June is usually warm\, clear\, and sunny during the days with much cooler nights. It can get hot\, and rain is unlikely. \nAlong with earthen cabins\, landscape walls\, ovens\, and plasters on site\, we’ve developed and use many systems for living more sustainably in town which you’ll get to know and use during the workshop: \n\nSolar cooking and wall heaters\nSmall scale solar PV\nWood stove  and solar thermosiphon water heating\nComposting – vermicomposting and conventional aerobic piles\nAlternative septic system – the Watson Wick\nBasic principles and practices of Permaculture\nOrganic small plot intensive gardening including season extenders like hoop houses\,  root cellaring and solar dehydrating\nScAvenging! – upcycling and salvaging materials from the urban waste stream\nLiving with little electricity and fossil fuels\nWood-fired hot tub\n\nLodging \nWe have a variety of lodging options including cob cabins\, rooms\, and sites for campers. \nOverview \nThis is one of the most comprehensive natural building workshops you can find. Together\, VersaTerra instructors have decades of experience on four different continents. This has helped us design rich learning experiences giving students the tools they need to become confident earthen builders. \nEarth is the mother of all building materials. For millennia\, and all over the world\, people have used earth to build beautiful\, simple\, efficient and inexpensive homes. It’s plentiful\, ecological\, and non-toxic. Plus\, it can’t burn\, won’t rot and is much simpler to build with than conventional construction. \nWe will teach you how to use clay-soil to build just about everything: from strong structural walls (cob and adobe) to beautiful floors\, plasters and light-straw-clay walls. Because the materials are fireproof\, they are ideally suited to sculpt ovens\, fireplaces and cook stoves. \nThe essence of your learning experience will revolve around developing a deep understanding of how to process and combine a few simple materials: clay-soil\, sand\, and straw. How you apply that in your building adventures is then up to you\, but you will find the possibilities endless and exciting.  \nWhat you will learn \nAfter this workshop\, you will feel confident that you can \n\nDesign and build yourself a cob cottage\nRemodel or renovate an existing home\, using natural materials\nBuild and use an earthen oven\nUse cob to create garden walls and hot tubs\nTeach a one-day natural building event yourself!\n\nSpecifically\, you will get hands-on experience and skill development in the following areas: \n\nFoundation systems\, rubble trench\, stem walls\, earthbag construction (as a stem wall)\nIdentifying the right materials\, screening\, processing\, testing\, costs\, amount calculations\nMixing cob efficiently\nMaking adobe bricks and using straw bales (“balecob”) and cordwood cob\nBuilding with cob: strong sculptural walls\, arches\, windows and doors\, niches\, and sculptural artwork\nElectricity and plumbing\, how to install wires and pipes in the walls\nRoof attachment and roof design\nLight-straw-clay: this is an infill technique perfect for code-approved buildings and natural renovations of existing homes. You will learn how to make the right materials and how to install them\nNatural plasters\, tools\, making your own plasters and paints\, colors\, applications\, how to apply it on earthen walls\, drywall\, wood\, concrete\nTamped floors\, finish earthen floors in natural buildings\, earthen floors in existing homes on plywood\, oriented strand board\, and concrete\nEarthen ovens: from start to finish and how to use them (pizza party!)\nDifferent design strategies\, natural design essentials\, passive solar\, using cob to make models\nBuilding codes\, how they work\, how to work with and around them\n\nDuring every workshop we make time for specific issues related to individual situations. This usually includes a careful look at different climates and regions\, living with families or in communities\, dealing with the building code\, physical and financial challenges\, appropriate technologies and more. \nOur book “House of Earth” will be used as a textbook for the workshop. \nThe Daily Schedule \nWe are aware that students make a big investment in a workshop such as this. We honor your time and do the best we can to share our knowledge and experience. Expect long days with lots of building and learning. On some evenings we will show slides and films featuring our previous projects and that of other people and cultures. Believe it or not\, we also still like to make time for a campfire and some music. We always strive to make the workshop itself a comfortable\, memorable and fun experience. \n\n8:00 breakfast\n9:00 building with cob\n1:00 lunch\n3:00 other techniques\, lectures\, and oven building\n7:00 Dinner\n8:00 lectures/slideshows/campfire/free time\n\nDelicious home-cooked meals are provided and will be vegetarian with occasional meat options. \nVersaTerra* Certification \nAfter full participation\, every student will receive a VersaTerra certificate. We believe that after taking this workshop\, participants are qualified to teach a one-day event in their community. By providing a certificate\, we want to empower our students to become facilitators of community revitalization through building with earth! \n*VersaTerra is a holistic design\, building\, and living philosophy\, celebrating clay-soil as its primary building material. Clay-soil is: \n\n\nPlentiful\, inexpensive or free\, durable\, easy to maintain and modify\, and endlessly reusable \n\n\nNon-toxic\, breathable\, soft\, beautiful\, and displays superior performance in a wide variety of climates \n\n\nSculptural by nature\, inviting to work with needing only simple tools and methods\, and easily combinable with other natural and human made materials. \n\n\nBy focusing on these specific qualities of clay-soil\, we can make the design\, building\, and living process a conduit for community revitalization and personal transformation\, while creating housing with dignity for the people of this world. \nPickup and Dropoff \nAirport pickup and dropoff is available from the Reno Airport\, Amtrak and Greyhound stations. Contact Kyle to arrange a lift. \nInstructors \nLead instructor Kyle Isacksen has been building with earth since 2010 and teaching natural building since 2011 with House Alive and the Be the Change Project. Kyle has a background in construction\, teaching\, and simple living.  He’s worked as a framer\, carpenter\, and commercial roofer and recently finished building a “green” conventional house in his neighborhood in Reno. He was a science teacher for 7 years\, is a frequent speaker on sustainable living\, and is a contributing writer for Mother Earth News magazine and blog. Kyle enjoys basketball\, hiking\, reading\, and martial arts. \nKathleen O’Brien started natural building with two VersaTerra workshops several years ago and has gone on to teach with us in India\, Mexico\, Oregon and Reno. She has extensive carpentry experience\, is a certified permaculture designer and talented grower\, and has over 20 years of public school teaching experience. She is an avid reader and writer and is currently building her own off-grid home at Long Ranch in Surprise Valley\, Nevada. \nJonathan Vocke started natural building three years ago and has since built and taught with us in India\, Mexico\, and Reno. When not slinging mud he’s a professional musician and music teacher in Baltimore.  He brings his love of music and his skill as a teacher to every workshop.  He is a talented builder and is particularly passionate about dry-stack stone work. \nKaty Chandler is the co-founder of the Be the Change Project and has lived in and played with natural building materials for many years. She is a prolific gardener\, certified permaculture designer\, urban garlic farmer\, and former math teacher and school designer.  She loves to dance\, laugh\, and pore over seed catalogs while cozied up to the wood stove on long winter nights. Kyle and Katy also have two teenage sons. \nRegistration \nGo here to register

Within the garden wall\, we will incorporate all the features of a wall in an earthen house: windows\, doors\, electricity\, plumbing\, arches\, niches\, and artwork. \n(We don’t start a whole building in a shorter workshop\, as attractive as that may sound; it will have people do too much of one thing (mixing cob and wall building) while not being able to learn the other important aspects of natural building in a meaningful way\, such as roof variations\, natural plasters\, earthen floors and design.) \nAbout the Site \nRosewater Ranch sits at the north-eastern base of the Sierra Nevada mountains\, on the edge of coniferous alpine forest and sagebrush steppe. The land is a delight of transitional eco-tones on a slope that runs from tall pines down to open grassland. The sky is big and the stars shine bright. Not far from Reno\, NV\, the ranch has a sunny and dry climate in the rain shadow of the Sierras\, though high enough at 5\,200 feet to receive a full share of winter and snow. In June days are typically sunny and warm – lovely working weather and nights can be cool. \nRosewater Ranch itself is a project 7 years in the making. The community’s goal is “…to become a multi-generational little village of farming\, land-loving folk who can live small and beautifully and pass on a worthwhile future for those yet to come. Through our own best efforts at good living\, community events and education\, and a patient dialogue with the land\, we hope to shape and adapt ourselves to be welcome here and to spark others into their own forms of work for a culture of generosity\, inclusion\, and belonging.” \nAt the moment\, Rosewater Ranch has a small nucleus of human residents\, a homestead goat dairy\, a free-range flock of hens\, homestead gardens and orchards\, pigs\, dogs\, cats\, and also on site are Loping Coyote Farms plant nursery and Prema Farm\, an organic vegetable market farm. \nWifi is available on site and cell coverage is good. \nLodging \nTent spots and car/camper/van parking are sprinkled across the property \nOverview \nThis is one of the most comprehensive natural building workshops you can find. Clay-soil is: \n\nPlentiful\, inexpensive or free\, durable\, easy to maintain and modify\, and endlessly reusable\nNon-toxic\, breathable\, soft\, beautiful\, and displays superior performance in a wide variety of climates\nSculptural by nature\, inviting to work with needing only simple tools and methods\, and easily combinable with other natural and human made materials.\n\nBy focusing on these specific qualities of clay-soil\, we can make the design\, building\, and living process a conduit for community revitalization and personal transformation\, while creating housing with dignity for the people of this world.

Not only are there plenty of hands-on lessons to learn from\, but we will also have ample discussion and informal classroom time. Most cob workshops don’t cover this many topics. But here\, you will learn all the core lessons needed to start building from this one workshop! \nPlus – there will be many hours of discussions about building cob homes and natural building throughout the workshop. Its a great way to get your questions answered and brainstorm your building ideas! \nThe workshop will be held at a private property in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The cob workshop was a life-changing experience. I learned a lot about natural building\, not only from Alex’s instruction\, experience and demonstrations\, but from interacting with people from different backgrounds who were a great source of collective knowledge. The hands-on experience was priceless!” Tony Romo\, Texas \n\n\n“The Cob Building Workshop was a great investment of my time!
