SUMMARY:Natural Building Part 1: Straw Bales\, Cob and Earthen Floors
DESCRIPTION:This is one of a series of comprehensive workshops in which we will be constructing a hybrid natural building using many site-sourced materials and permaculture principles. This workshop will focus on clay and straw\, two of the most versatile natural building materials. In the first part of the workshop\, you will learn to: \n• Build a highly insulating and fire-resistant straw bale wall \n• Mix clay soil\, sand and straw into cob \n• Sculpt cob into beautiful\, durable walls \n• Sustainably harvest and test clay soils \n• Determine the best cob mix for your soil \n• Understand the difference between insulation and thermal mass and how to use them together to make an efficient passive solar home \nThe extended practicum will focus on faster ways to mix and build with cob using machines\, sculpting cob details\, and how to install an earthen floor. \nEach workshop is organized into two parts\, the weekend Intensive (Friday through Sunday) will include the bulk of theoretical and practical training\, followed by a 4-day Practicum (Monday through Thursday) focused on hands-on building experience. Participants are encouraged to attend both the workshop and practicum for the full experience\, which is incentivized by a reduced workshop tuition. Workshops fees include an all-organic lunch and dinner as well as camping/housing options and an early morning yoga class. \nFor friends interested in going deep we are inviting 6 people to do an immersion through the Natural Building series. This immersion allows participants to attend workshops for free and have all meals provided in exchange for weekly work hours\, primarily toward building\, but also other supportive tasks for workshop prep and facility maintenance.  \nLead instructor Michael G. Smith is one of the world’s authorities on building with earth and straw with over 25 years of teaching experience. In 1993\, Michael co-founded the Cob Cottage Company\, which reintroduced cob building to the United States. He is the author or co-author of many articles and books\, including “The Art of Natural Building” and “The Hand-Sculpted House.” Michael has designed and/or built over 60 natural structures\, specializing in space- and energy-efficient hybrid designs. SUMMARY:Build a Complete Cob Cottage near the Yuba River (Nevada City\, California)
DESCRIPTION:OUR HOSTS\, LOCATION & PROJECT \n Yubarrio was formed by a group of friends in 2015 with the intention to create a diverse little village devoted to enjoying and caring for the land. With a motto of “slow and steady\,” the folks on the land are carefully building bike trails to the Yuba River\, reducing overcrowding and fuel loads in the far-ranging woods\, milling bug-killed trees into timbers for carbon-negative buildings\, growing a bounty of herbs for medicine and food for feasting and allowing the vision for the project to unfold in its own sweet time.\n\nClaire\, born and raised in Marseille\, France and Kipchoge\, an Oregon native\, met in Europe when he and his friends were on a pedal-powered music concert tour.  A few years later they started looking for their new “home” and eventually settled on this gorgeous hilltop piece of land about 4 years ago\, putting their nomad life on hold.  This beautiful Nevada County mostly forested land is close to the Yuba River and is the source of their wood (they mill it themselves) and includes a large vegetable and herb garden.  Claire is a photographer and herbal medicine maker and food lover/crafstwoman. Her energy for this lifestyle is overbounding and full of ideas and projects to live cleanly and abundantly with the land.  Her photography work (including mountain lions and bears) is visible on her website and instagram (https://www.clairepotin.com/\, instagram.com/potin.potions). Kipchoge is a bike touring musician (YouTube: Ginger Ninjas/Pleasant Revolution) and activist working on software for mass popular movement building (cancelprime.com). He co-founded and led Xtracycle for years\, pioneering the modern cargo bike movement and enabling a new generation of car-free and car-light lifestyles. The couple have a very energetic 5-year old son Zephyr who represents his name well.\n\nThe land is shared with several other community members who specialize in different areas to bring their skills to the blend.  One of them who has lived here for a year is Brandon “Nutmeg” Jonutz\, a Romanian descendant born in Fremont who lives car free\, loves ferments\, favors bare feet\, blows didgeridoos and wouldn’t be caught dead with a website. We will be building Brandon’s new cottage in the shade of the madrones and black oaks on a soft\, fluffy forest floor. We will also be meeting other landmates like Camille the crafter\, Jesse the traveler/builder/bassist\, Paul the inventor\, and Shannon the cellist.\n\n\n\n \nNevada City \n\nNevada City\, California is a unique and charming little town in the Sierra Nevada Foothills area. The entire downtown district is a national historic landmark where folks enjoy high quality restaurants and a variety of fine shops \, galleries\, and great cafes. There is a vibrant artsy feel to the town with lots of opportunity to dance to world class DJ’s that come through town\, yoga studios\, as well as Ecstatic Dance every Tuesday hosted in the historic Miner’s Foundry. Bordering the Tahoe National Forest and located just minutes from many lakes and rivers\, Nevada City is ringed by deep green pine-covered hills. \nOne of the main attractions of the town\, especially in the summertime\, is the magical Yuba river with miles of beautiful emerald green swimming holes! Swimming in the river is a staple summer activity. Temperatures can get pretty hot\, up to 100 degrees in August/Sept\, but more generally in the high \n \nYuba River \n\n80s to mid 90s in town. Our land is a bit higher (2600ft) from the town center (and a 10 minute drive) and so it can be up to 10 degrees cooler here. By September the evenings and early mornings have the potential to be a bit chilly\, so good to bring something warm. There are plenty of beautiful places to explore around the area on your weekends off – famous Lake Tahoe (largest alpine lake and second deepest lake in United States) is only about an hour away\, Reno is 1.5 hrs\, San Francisco is 2.5hrs and the ocean is a 4.5 hr drive to the magical coast town of Mendocino. There are also great hot springs – Sierra Hot Springs – an hour and a half away\, for our weekend adventures when we take a break from Cob!!! \n  \nWEEKS 1-5: ADVANCED COB BUILDING WORKSHOP \nThe 35-day Advanced Cob Building Workshop consists of 25 days of theoretical instruction (lectures with graphics) and construction for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon. Students arrive on Sunday and settle in. International students can check with Host about arriving earlier to adjust to time difference\, etc. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are days off for resting\, exploring the area\, studying and\, if desired\, continuing to build at your own pace. The last Saturday morning may include some finishing up work and cleanup. Morning (4 hours) and afternoon (3 hours) sessions each have a 15-minute snack break. Lunch break lasts 1.5 hours after which the afternoon session begins at 2:30pm.  On MWF we have a one-hour lecture on whatever we are working on that day and/or the next day\, followed by construction for 2 hours. On TTh we begin the practical work at 2:30pm.  After class there is a 90-minute break before dinner\, which includes an optional yoga or other body relaxation session. There will also be one evening a week after dinner for showing slides\, videos and having Course-related discussions. Other evenings are free and/or organized by group for extracurricular activities as desired. \nThe 35-day Course will offer practical learning by building a 150ft2 (size may be a bit bigger or smaller depending on number of students) curvilinear building. The Course starts with the Foundation during Week 1 followed by the Cob Walls during Weeks 2-4\, which include a door\, opening and fixed windows\, shelves\, artistic inserts like bottles\, driftwood\, branches\, etc.\, electrical and plumbing infrastructure\, sculpting and the roof connection elements. We will also pour the first 2 layers of floor over the gravel underlayment and apply one coat of earthen plaster on the interior and exterior wall. \nIn Week 5 we will build a roof structure and cover it with wood and a green roof.  We will aim to complete the roof by the end of Week 5 and also simultaneously build the “Sara” Masonry Heater (see below) which takes about 1-1/2 days total.  The roof is a big task and requires different tools and skills and may not be able to keep everyone busy at once so we offer the Heater/Stove as another project at the same time.  The completion of the roof is always the goal but also depends on the flow of other external circumstances including student abilities and space.  All the relevant information will be covered in lectures as always. \nThose who complete this 35-day Workshop will receive the Advanced Cobber Certification of Completion for Foundation and Cob Walls (which includes Door\, Windows\, Shelves\, Art\, Electrical & Plumbing)\, Floor\, Plaster & Roof. \n  \nWEEK 5: “SARA” MASONRY HEATER & STOVE \nIn Week 5 the workshop will take a turn and learn all about the highly-efficient\, low-cost earthen adobe block stove & heater developed at the University of Argentina for low-income rural households that goes by the name “Sara”.  For more details on the “Estufa Sara” check out this link.  Like the rocket stove it uses minimal fuel in the form of branches and small wood pieces and is a double-combustion stove with horizontal and vertical channels built into the upper box\, allowing for maximal use of fuel energy for heating the thermal mass of the stove and anything else it passes through\, ie a bench\, floor\, or wall.  The “Sara” stove is used for heating as well as cooking on and can also  include an oven on the side  (not included in this workshop). \nThe workshop will continue with the same schedule as in the prior 4 weeks\, with lecture three times a week\, slides and/or video on Wednesday night and hands-on construction the rest of the time. \n  \nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \nThe 35-day Intermediate Cob Building plus Masonry Heater Workshop begins on Sunday evening\, August 18th with Dinner and ends on the last Sunday\, September 22 (5 weeks later)\, with Lunch. \nMondays through Fridays we will build and Saturdays/Sundays we will have time off. The last Saturday morning will be used to wrap things up and clean up\, and the rest of the day will be used for a final group activity before our celebration dinner\, graduation ceremony and fire circle. The Workshop will end with the Closing Circle and Lunch on Sunday. \nThe daily schedule will be: \n6:30-7:30 Yoga & Meditation/Dance \n7:30-8:30 Breakfast \n8:45-1:00 Class \n1:00-2:30 Lunch \n2:30-5:30 Class \n5:30-7:00 Rest/Yoga/Dance \n7:00-8:00 Dinner \n8:00-9:00 Slides/Videos/Discussion (once a week) \nOther nights will have optional activities like Salsa Dancing\, Fire Circles\, Music\, and skinny-dipping in the Yuba by the Full Moon! \nDETAILED COURSE CONTENTS \nStudents will learn every phase of building a cob building from foundation through the roof in lectures/theory. In addition to the lectures\, slideshows and videos will be shown to support and enhance their understanding of cob materials\, cob building\, design\, geography \, budgeting\, business options and legal issues. \nOur hands-on practice will include: \nbuilding foundation                                                                                                                      analyzing soils and materials\nmaking test bricks\ndeciding on correct mixture\ndeciding on best location\nmaking cob solo and with partner\nbuilding with cob\npreparing and inserting the door\npreparing and inserting fixed and opening windows\npreparing and inserting shelves\ninserting bottle windows and other objects\ninserting electrical wiring and plumbing in walls\nsculpting\npreparing and applying earthen plaster (1 coat)\npouring an earthen floor (2 layers)\npreparing walls for roof connection\nbuilding a roof structure\nbuilding a green roof covering\nbuilding an earthen masonry heater/stove \nIn addition to Cob Building practices\, the Course material also includes: \nlegal issues about cob\ncost analysis\ncreating a cob business (building/teaching)\nassisting\, interning and teaching with CruzinCobGlobal\nmaking small-scale designs of cob structures\, time permitting \n  \nREQUIREMENTS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING PHYSICAL WORK \nCruzinCobGlobal’s Cob Building workshops are an intense and demanding building experience. The goal of our month-long Complete Cob Workshop is to complete a whole structure including the roof covering by the last Friday of the workshop. This is quite an accomplishment and when completed\, give students alot of pride and confidence in building on their own after the workshop. \nThe Monday through Friday schedule is rigorous and meant to train students in experiencing what it takes to build a cob building in a reasonable amount of time. We also have a great time bonding\, playing music\, doing Yoga\, sitting around the fire and relaxing after class time. Students can use weekends to rest\, recuperate and enjoy getting to know the location. We accept all levels and abilities and students are never required to go beyond what they feel comfortable with. There are always other activities besides mixing and building which are needed to build the house (getting materials\, trimming\, screening material\, cutting straw\, sculpting\, plaster\, etc) and students learn alot by watching. \nStudents will need to come prepared for physical labor from Day 1. \nThis includes: \nWork clothes appropriate for the country and climate we are in (long pants for Muslim countries)\nSlip-on flip-flops\nWork Boots or Closed Shoes for Foundation and Roof\, if applicable\nLightweight rubber gloves (not gardening gloves)\nGood moisturizer (clay is drying and dehydrating!)\nHat\nWater Bottle\nNotebook/Pen/Camera\nA 2 ft level and sharp-toothed wood saw (optional but recommended) \nStudents are required to read “The Hand-Sculpted House” before the workshop begins and any other book they find\, as well as watching videos on YouTube\, especially the ones posted on CruzinCobGlobal’s website under Gallery to get an idea of what is expected. Please bring your book(s). \nStudents must tend to their own personal needs\, drink alot of water\, rest when needed and exert themselves at a steady pace. Students who cannot do the strenuous physical work should let us know before the workshop begins so we can adjust appropriately. It is totally OK to come for the lecture/theory part\, and then help the building part in less physically demanding ways\, ie cutting straw\, sifting for plaster\, hammering nails into frames or shelves\, sculpting\, plastering\, cutting bottles. There is alot to do besides making and building with cob!!!! \nFinally\, please bring a watch or use your phone to be prompt and ready for each part of the Course including meals. Feel free to share your dietary needs with CCG or the Host and bring your essential snacks and foods\, pillow and whatever you NEED to be comfortable and happy. Feel free to also bring slides\, videos\, movies and books to share\, as well as a sample of your soil to test. \n  \nMEALS & ACCOMMODATIONS \nThis workshop accommodations will be camping in your own tents or indoors in the barn for free along with some other paid indoor options.  There is a very sweet tiny home on wheels that is all decked out for one person or a couple that will be available.  There may be a few other fun options in buses that are outfitted for living in.  People can also choose to stay in town or rent a room nearby but would need to provide their own transportation to the site each day.  There will be outdoor and indoor showers and toilets and an indoor kitchen.  All the indoor facilities will be in the big red barn as will be the communal area for slideshows and lectures.  Days can be very hot (90ºF) and nights can be chilly in the mountains.  Please bring warm clothes for nighttime and make sure you have a warm sleeping bag  Bring bathing suit\, towels\, work clothes\, weekend clothes\, etc. \n \nBrazilian Food Goddesses!!!! \n\nThree meals/day will be served Monday through Friday. Meals will be vegetarian\, organic and local and delicious as always.  If you are a carnivore please bring jerky\, canned fish and snacks but we will also make the effort to have some meat/fish options 1-2 times a week\, depending on student needs.  Also bring your extra sweets and snacks that you like because we will be 12 miles from the nearest store. \nWeekends are free to leave and go to the river\, hot springs or hiking or camping elsewhere.  If you stay at the site\, please be prepared to provide your own meals and cook in the communal kitchen. \n  \nTRAVEL LOGISTICS \nThe largest nearest city to fly into is San Francisco or Oakland. Sacramento and Reno airports are smaller but closer.  From there you can rent a car with other students and drive the 2.5-hour drive to Nevada City and keep the car for the month so you are independent to go where you want on weekends and even run into town during the weekday nights.  There are also Greyhound buses from SF and Oakland or Craigslist Rideshare and BlaBlaCar are great options that are cheap and efficient for getting a ride with people already driving in that direction.  Nicole and Jared are happy to get people from town when they arrive.  Check out Kiwi.com and Rome2Rio.com for the best info on getting from your origin to destination points anywhere in the world.  We will also offer up a rideshare list of givers and takers as the time draws near. \nWe will be sending you all the workshop details by email a month before the workshop and help you with all the transport info so you will have a smooth  time getting here! No worries! \n\n\n\n\nCOST & PAYMENT \nThe 5-week workshop includes tuition\, 3 meals/day and indoor/outdoor camping facilities as well as transport from and to Nevada City when you arrive and leave.  Workshop will happen Monday through Friday and weekends are free to explore and travel or stay at the site. Weekdays food will be prepared by experienced cooks and meals will be mostly vegetarian with a few meat options per week depending on student needs. On weekends students will prepare their own meals and/or go out to eat if they remain in town. \n5-week Advanced Cob Building+Masonry Heater/Stove Wkshp\, Camping\, Food: (8/18-9/22) \n$2500\, by May 18\, 2019 \n$2600\, after May 18\, 2019 \nTo register and make your payment\, please contact claudine@cruzincobglobal.org. \nPayment can be made by Venmo\, Paypal\, Zelle\, free Bank Transfer to US or European Bank account or Transferwise.  Please contact Claudine to assist you with cheapest transaction option.  You can also contact her at +1831212-7225 by phone\, SMS or Whatsapp. \n  \nWORK TRADE \nThere are 4 work trade positions open for the full 5-week workshop each for 1.25 hours per day in either the kitchen or onsite. Each position gives a $250 discount off of the full workshop payment\, which depends on when you decide to complete the payment. To hold your spot there is a 50% deposit due immediately and then you have the choice of paying by May 18 ($2500)\, or after May 18\, 2019 ($2600). No experience is needed and they will not interfere with your class hours. \nThe kitchen work trade positions will most likely be in charge of preparing and putting out breakfast from 6:30-7:30am and cleaning up from 8:15-8:30am.  The onsite work trade positions will also be early morning shifts prepping the work site from 7:00-8:00am before breakfast and then staying from 5:30-5:45pm for extra clean-up or prep work at the end of the day. \nPlease inquire for applications asap as these are the first spots to go. \n  \nINSTRUCTOR \nClaudine Désirée\, founder and director of CCG\, learned how to cob with Michael Smith in 2003 in northern CA and has been building and teaching ever since completing her first project\, her legal 200 ft2 studio\, in her backyard. In 2014\, she was one of the first people to legalize a cob building on the west coast of the US\, where the building code laws are the most stringent due to high earthquake risk. \nIn 2008\, she created SunflowerCobBuilding which became CruzinCob and then\, in April 2015\, evolved into CruzinCobGlobal\, the international cob workshop business she runs from wherever she happens to be on the Planet. To date she has taught close to 100 workshops\, 25 of which have been part of CCG’s exciting international circuit since the Spring of 2015 in the following countries: Spain\, the Canaries (Spain)\, Senegal\, Cabo Verde\, France\, Morocco\, Portugal\, the Azores (Portugal)\, Colombia\, Brazil\, Chile and the US. \n

SUMMARY:Fast Cob! A revolution in Natural Building…
DESCRIPTION:All of our Natural Building Workshops are led and facilitated by the builder of a 900 sq.ft. split level Cob Home.  This home was built in 5 months during 2016.  About 80% of it was built by one person – your workshop instructor – on his own.  He had help putting up the floor and roofing beams as well as the giant windows and skylights\, but 90% of the cobbing was done alone.  That’s the power of this technique that we call Fast Cob! \nCompare that to his first building\, built with the traditional West Coast Cob technique: a 64 sq.ft. utility shed that needed 28 people and 2 building seasons to complete. \nCovering all the Basics: At a relaxed pace\, we’ll learn and practice mixing and building with Fast Cob!  As the week progresses\, you’ll gain the skills and inspiration to build your own structures.  This year\, I’m planning to show you how fast this technique is by starting and completing a 100+ sq.ft. wood shed – with a loft – in just 6 days!  Last year\, a workshop of 4 people built a 12′ high by 8′ wide wall…and that was only half of what we accomplished. \nIn between hands-on Fast Cob! sessions\, we’ll look at foundations\, electrical\, plumbing\, upper floors\, roofs\, and general design.  You get everything you need to go off and start building on your own because we design every workshop around you and your needs!

SUMMARY:Natural Building Part 2: Adobe\, Cob\, Wattle and Daub\, Arches & Clay Plasters
DESCRIPTION:More fun with clay\, straw\, and sticks! This is one of a series of comprehensive workshops in which we will be constructing a hybrid natural building using many site-sourced materials and permaculture principles. Building on what we learned in the previous workshop\, we will branch out into other earthen wall systems and begin the finishing process. \n• Make adobe blocks from clay soil mixed with straw or other fibers \n• Build different styles of earthen arches\, with and without forms \n• Make several types of wattle and daub\, a sculptural\, thin earthen wall made of sticks\, clay and straw \n• Learn the steps to turn a raw earthen or straw bale wall into a finished\, durable wall by applying plasters made of clay and lime. \n• Understand how to connect multiple natural wall systems together in a strong\, efficient hybrid home \nThe extended practicum will include more wall building and much more experience with earthen plasters. SUMMARY:A Complete Introduction to Ecological Building Techniques (Cob\, Wattle and Daub\, Earthbags\, Natural Plasters)
DESCRIPTION:About The Workshop\nThis six-day workshop will cover considerations on picking a house site including passive solar design\, building a rubble trench and natural rock and lime mortar foundation\, wattle and daub wall construction\, building with cob\, earthbag construction\, natural\, earthen plasters\, and ways to heat your home in a sustainable and natural way.  During the workshop\, we will build a rubble trench and rock foundation for a new structure. We will also build wattle and daub walls for a communal center currently under construction\, and add natural earthen and lime plasters over the finished walls\, including adding several clay-based paints. Additionally\, we will be building a cob oven\, an earthbag sofa\, and visiting several other natural homes to explore the wide variety of natural building techniques used around the beautiful Lake Atitlan area. This complete natural building workshop will introduce you to several different and varied natural building techniques and is the perfect way to either begin your learning journey related to natural building or further develop your natural building skills. \nWe FULLY believe that the best way to truly learn about natural building is through hard work and getting your hands and feet dirty. Many of our past workshop participants have expressed appreciation for the fact that the majority of our workshops are dedicated to the PRAXIS of building. Our worksite features several earthen buildings in different stages of completion\, from a finished cob cabin to a longhouse in the early stages of planning. If you are a learner through doing\, this is the workshop for you! \nFor this workshop we offer private transportation from Guatemala City to Santiago Atitlan and vice versa. Lodging is at a comfortable hostel with WiFi and hot water in the vibrant and lively indigenous town of Santiago Atitlan located on the shores of one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Included in the price of the workshop is a day-long boat tour of several communities around Lake Atitlan to better get to know the surroundings and learn about other natural construction techniques including vernacular adobe construction\, bamboo architecture\, and more. Also\, participants will have the opportunity to participate in several recreational and cultural activities during the course of the week to enjoy the beauty of the lake and learn more about the unique culture and history of the Tz’utujil people. \nThe workshop begins with dinner on November 30th and ends with breakfast on December 7th. \nPickup in Antigua or Guatemala City airport is at 3pm on the 30th. Departure to return to Antigua or Guatemala City is on the morning of the 7th of December. \nAntigua is a beautiful colonial city popular with tourists that is roughly 45 minutes from Guatemala City airport. There are reasonably priced shuttles that can take you directly there from the airport. The following link explains in detail the process: (how to get to Antigua from the Guatemala City airport). \nWe are available to answer any questions you have about travel logistics\, what to expect or workshop content. Please ask! \n\n\nNatural Building Techniques to be Taught\n\n\n\nRubble Trench and Stone Stem Wall: Instead of relying on concrete footers\, we will explore how you can build a strong\, reliable foundation for your home that offers both structural and drainage functions with nothing but rock\, rubble\, and lime.\nWattle and Daub: This simple wall construction technique uses a lattice of wood that is then filled in and plastered with earthen materials. It is among the most anti-seismic building materials known.\nEarthbags: Filling polypropylene sacks with stabilized earth allows you to build massive\, thick\, and sturdy walls for your home.\nCob: A mixture of sand\, clay and straw allows you to build the walls to your home that can then be sculpted into any design that you choose. The thick walls also function as a thermal mass to effectively heat your home.\nNatural Plasters: A naturally built structure is nothing but a mud hut until you add the finishing touches of a natural\, earthen or lime-based plaster that turns your mud hut into an earthen home.\n\n*Each day of the workshop will offer a mix of classroom-style conceptual/theoretical instruction in the mornings and several hours of practice with the different natural building methodologies that we will be using. We will also have the opportunity to visit several naturally built structures around the lake and process what we’ve been learning at the end of each day. Each participant will receive electronic copies of several leading books in the natural building niche. \n\nCost: $500 per person\, which includes: \n\nTransport service between Antigua and Santiago Atitlan and vice versa.\nPrivate lodging in a clean and comfortable local hostel with WiFi.\nTwo meals a day (dinner is open for you to explore the town of Santiago).\nWater and snacks during the workshop.\nSix full days of workshop.\nA day tour of the lake\, in which you will travel by boat to different towns to enjoy their beauty and see magnificent examples of the very natural building techniques you have been learning about and putting into practice.\nNumerous activities that engage the rich local Tz’utujil culture and that invite you to experience the recreational possibilities of the surrounding environment.\nEducational materials.\n\nMore Information at: \nhttps://utzkaslimaal.org/about-our-workshops/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/utzkaslimaal/ \ntobiasroberts20@hotmail.com

SUMMARY:VersaTerra Pro in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:(this workshop now has a waiting list. please email Kyle for more information) \nThis VersaTerra workshop is being offered by the nonprofit “Be the Change Project.” it takes place on the west coast of Mexico. Learn how to build and camp on the beach! \nIncluded in the fee: \n\n\nThree vegetarian meals/day Monday-Friday prepared by a local chef as well as coffee\, tea\, and a snack (there will be optional meat on occasion). \n\n\nCampsite on the beach \n\n\nOur course book “House of Earth” (sent to you ahead of time) \n\n\nA VersaTerra certificate \n\n\nInstructors: \nKyle Isacksen\, Kathleen Chandler\, Kathleen O’Brien \nOverview \nThis is the most comprehensive earthen construction workshop you can find. Decades of teaching on four different continents has helped us design this rich learning experience giving students the tools they need to become confident earthen builders. \nEarth is the mother of all building materials. For millennia\, and all over the world\, people have used earth to build beautiful\, simple\, efficient and inexpensive homes. It’s plentiful\, ecological and non-toxic. Plus\, it can’t burn\, won’t rot and is much simpler to build with than conventional construction materials. \nWe will teach you how to use clay-soil to build just about everything; from strong structural walls (cob and Adobe) to beautiful floors\, plasters and light-straw-clay walls. Because the materials are fireproof\, they are ideally suited to sculpt ovens\, fireplaces and cook stoves. \nThe essence of your learning experience will revolve around developing a deep understanding of how to process and combine a few simple materials: clay-soil\, sand and straw. How you apply that in your building adventures is then up to you\, but you will find the possibilities endless and exciting. \nDuring this workshop we will build a beautiful cob cabin from the ground up and an earthen bread/pizza oven. This includes interior and exterior walls\, roof\, foundation\, windows\, doors\, electricity\, plumbing\, arches\, plasters\, niches\, roof\, and artwork. \nThis 28-day VersaTerra Pro Intensive is designed to provide a much deeper dive into earth\, natural building\, and sustainable living through the construction of a complete cabin.  Over the four weeks you’ll have the opportunity to get into a building rhythm where your new learning and skills can be applied and fine-tuned with the help of our three instructors.  Simply put\, the more time you have with the mud\, the more competent and confident builder you’ll become. The extended time frame also gives us more space for discussions\, exploration of design philosophy\, and engagement with appropriate technologies including microsolar\, composting toilets\, water harvesting. \n  \nWhat will you learn \nAfter this workshop\, you will feel confident that you can \n\n\nbuild yourself a cob cottage \n\n\nremodel\, renovate an existing home\, using natural materials \n\n\nbuild and use an earthen oven \n\n\nuse cob to create garden walls\, outdoor fireplaces\, patios\, benches\, etc. \n\n\ndesign small cottages \n\n\nteach a one-day natural building event yourself! \n\n\nSpecifically\, you will get hands-on experience and skill development in the following areas: \n\n\nSite assessment \n\n\nFoundation systems\, rubble trench\, stem walls\, earthbag construction (as a stem wall) \n\n\nIdentifying the right materials\, screening\, processing\, testing\, costs\, calculating amounts \n\n\nMixing cob efficiently\, making adobe bricks \n\n\nBuilding with cob: strong sculptural walls\, arches\, windows and doors\, niches\, artwork and mosaics \n\n\nElectricity and plumbing\, how to install wires and pipes in the walls \n\n\nRoof attachment and roof design \n\n\nLight-straw-clay: an infill technique perfect for code-approved buildings and natural renovations of existing homes. \n\n\nNatural plasters:  making your own plasters and paints\, tools\, colors\, applications\, how to apply on earthen walls\, drywall\, wood\, concrete \n\n\nTamped floors\, finish earthen floors in natural buildings\, earthen floors in existing homes on plywood\, oriented strand board and concrete \n\n\nEarthen ovens from start to finish and how to use them (with a pizza party!) \n\n\nDesign strategies\, natural design essentials\, passive solar\, using cob to make models \n\n\nBuilding codes\, how they work\, how to work with them and around them \n\n\nNatural building costs \n\n\nDuring every workshop we make time for specific issues related to individual situations. This usually includes a careful look at different climates and regions\, living with families or in communities\, dealing with the building code\, physical and financial challenges\, appropriate technologies and more. \n  \nThe daily schedule \nWe are aware that students make a big investment in a workshop such as this so we honor your time and do the best we can to share our knowledge\, experience\, and passion. We’ll work in the mornings and break after lunch when it starts getting hot and we’re all ready for a swim.  We’ll regroup in the late afternoon for a couple hours for discussions\, exploring techniques in more detail\, and visiting other local natural buildings. On some evenings we’ll share slide shows and films featuring our previous projects and those of other people and cultures. Believe it or not\, we still like to make time for campfires and music. We always strive to make the workshop itself a comfortable\, memorable\, and fun experience. \nMonday-Friday \n7;15 breakfast \n8:15 ride to site \n8:30-1:00 cobbing \n1:15 lunch & a ride back to the campsite \n2:00-4:00 free time \n4:30-6:30 lecture \n7:00 dinner \n8:00 slide shows/campfires/free time \nSaturday & Sunday \nWe’ll work until lunch on Saturday (breakfast and lunch will be served on Saturday). Sundays are off for exploration and enjoying local food  (no meals provided). \n  \nAbout the site and local area \n“Mambo-Mambo” \nThe workshop will take place on a verdant piece of land in the hills overlooking beautiful Tenacatita Bay and Boca de Iguanas beach.  Alejandra and Camila\, a Mexican mother-daughter duo\, purchased the land in 2018 with the vision of creating a permaculture-infused travelers’ hostel and center for learning.  They’ve been hard at work terracing the slope\, planting scores of fruit trees\, flowers\, & herbs\, and constructing two earthbag cabins\, a ferrocement cistern\, and a palapa-roofed kitchen.  In the winter of 2018/19 we helped build at Mambo-Mambo and began planning this workshop. \nSee Alejandra and Camila’s blog here. \nWe’ll be staying near the small and friendly town of La Manzanilla\, with plenty of restaurants and taco joints\, music\, dancing\, and an incredible beach that stretches over 5km along the bay. \nWe’ll camp at a beachfront campground a short ride away from the building site.  The campground has restrooms\, showers\, shade from palapas and palm trees\, an outdoor kitchen\, and beach access just steps away from your tent.  Breakfast and dinner will be served at the campground\, lunch at the building site. Afternoon & evening programming will happen at the campsite as well. \nRecreation & Local Sights \nThe ocean water is warm and luscious and a pleasure to swim in.  The waves are friendly and perfect for body surfing and boogie boarding and the sand is ideal for building sandcastles.  Many locals go for long swims in the morning or take walks on the beach with the sunrise and sunset. \nThere are several restaurants in town with beachfront seating where it’s easy to spend an afternoon enjoying a drink\, the sun and surf\, and time with friends.  There are taco joints in town to sample\, a market day each week on the square that abounds in local crafts (textiles\, woodwork\, pottery…)\, general stores for food and gear\, a few art galleries\, three cafes\, and even an English-language used bookstore. \nLa Manzanilla is also known for its “Cocodrilario” or crocodile preserve – a protected mangrove lagoon home to scores of the big reptiles (some as long as 15 feet!).  There’s a wonderful boardwalk tour that ends at a croc nursery where visitors can hold young crocs. And\, for birders\, there are boat tours through the mangroves where dozens of tropical bird species can be seen in their natural habitat. \nA short taxi-ride away is Tenacatita beach\, one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever been to.  There are fewer people\, umbrellas to rent with light foods and drinks to order\, and great reef snorkeling in a cove just around a bend. \nWhen we were in La Manz with our family\, we enjoyed renting one of the many fishing boats (with a captain) to tour and fish around the bay.  We caught fish each time and saw dolphins\, turtles\, and even whales. \n \nWeather \nThe weather this time of year is just about ideal and a perfect antidote to the northern winter. Temps average 83 (high) and 68 (low) in January & February and rain is very rare. \nGetting There \nThere are three airports near La Manzanilla: Puerto Vallarta\, Guadalajara\, and Manzanillo.  We will offer one group pick up from Puerto Vallarta (about 3.5 hours away) in a van on Saturday\, January 11th at 4pm. This way\, you can plan to fly to Puerto Vallarta anytime before then\, enjoy the city a bit (or hang at the airport)\, meet up with fellow cobbers\, and have a ride together to La Manzanilla.  From Guadalajara (5 hours) there are easy bus connections followed by a simple one-hour taxi ride from Manzanillo. For Manzanillo (1 hour away)\, taxis are easy to find and the cost is about $50. \n  \nVersaterra* certification \nAfter full participation\, every student will receive a VersaTerra certificate. We believe that after taking this workshop\, participants are qualified to teach at least a one-day event in their neighborhood. The certificate will also allow you to promote your event(s) through the House Alive Facebook page. By providing a certificate\, we want to empower our student to become facilitators of community revitalization through building with earth! \n*VersaTerra is a holistic design\, building and living philosophy\, celebrating clay-soil as its primary building material. Clay-soil is: \n\n\nplentiful\, inexpensive or free\, durable\, easy to maintain and modify\, and endlessly reusable \n\n\nnon-toxic\, breathable\, soft\, beautiful\, and displays superior performance in a wide variety of climates \n\n\nsculptural by nature\, inviting to work with needing only simple tools and methods\, and easily combines with other natural and human made materials. \n\n\nBy focusing on these specific qualities of clay-soil\, we can make the design\, building and living process a conduit for community revitalization and personal transformation\, while creating housing with dignity for the people of this world. \nClick here to read more about Versaterra \n  \nBringing kids! \nWe welcome the participation of young ones. In past workshops they have always been a welcome addition to our group and have participated in the learning process at different levels\, depending on their age and interest.   Give Kyle a call to discuss bringing kids in more detail. Katy and Kyle’s two boys\, ages 10 and 13\, will be in and out of the workshop. \nCosts for kids: this varies based on age but includes camping\, food\, and instruction as they participate.  Call for details. \n  \nRegistration \nIn order to secure your spot for this program\, please fill out the registration form on our website\, and send a $500 deposit to: \nBe the Change \n2055 McCloud Avenue \nReno\, NV 89512 \nChecks or money orders should be made out to “Be the Change Project”. \nDeposits are non-refundable\, unless the workshop fills to capacity. \nAfter we have received your deposit\, we will send you an email with more information on the workshop\, how to prepare yourself\, what to bring\, more info on transportation\, etc. \n \n

SUMMARY:Build a Cob Outdoor Kitchen & Oven near Pucón\, Chile
DESCRIPTION:***Course will be taught in English or in English & Spanish depending on student needs.*** \nHOST & LOCATION \nCruzinCobGlobal will be returning to Chile for a second Cob building workshop offering you a transformational educational opportunity\, an escape from the northern hemisphere winter for the month of February\, and a chance to visit one of the most beautiful places in the world.  We will be hosted by Damián Walker\, a multi-talented chef\, local restaurant owner\, interior and furniture designer focused on reusing materials in new ways different from their original use.  Damián has chosen to live in the awe-inspiring Pucón region of Chile\, surrounded by volcanoes\, hot springs\, lakes\, national parks\, forests\, rivers and an endless green landscape in summer because of his big love for the nature here. \n\nDamián shares 10 hectares with 8 other families\, 2 of which are communal\, in which there are forests and an estuary\, pristine drinking water and no fences.  All the families share a common vision of living as self-sufficiently and sustainably as possible for maximum independence\, growing their food\, tending to animals\, producing their energy\, etc.  We will be building the first structure on the land at the same time that other builders will be beginning the foundation and wood framing for his light clay straw home. \n\nThe land is situated between Pucón and Villarrica\, a very popular summer vacation spot as well as a ski center in the winter.  The workshop will be starting during the middle of the high tourist season which peters out mid-February.  There are many activities for the weekends\, mostly in the nature\, but also in the lively towns where people from all over Chile and beyond like to hang out. \n\n  \nPROJECT \nThis Intermediate Cobber Certification Course will build the semi-circular cob wall and a reciprocal frame (or other) green roof of an outdoor kitchen along with a cob oven and bench.  One third of the outdoor kitchen will have full-height cob walls and one-third will have partial walls and one-third will be open. The reciprocal frame green roof will extend on the opening side\, supported by additional posts\, to cover an outdoor seating area.  The foundation and roof-supporting posts will be built before the workshop. Lectures will cover foundation even though we will not be building the foundation for the building but we WILL build the bench foundation and part of the oven foundation. While the Intermediate Level workshops take 28 days to complete the building since the foundation is done beforehand\, because we will not be enclosing the structure\, it will take only 3 of the weeks which will give us the time to build an oven and benches connected to the building. Lectures always cover everything. \nBelow is a model of what will be built in the workshop minus the roof! \n\n  \nINTERMEDIATE COB BUILDING WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThe 28-day Intermediate Cob Building Workshop consists of 20 days of theoretical instruction (in English or English & Spanish depending on student needs) with lectures & graphics\nand construction for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon.\nStudents arrive on Sunday and the Course begins at 4pm before Dinner with an Introduction to the Site and the Project.  Dinner is served at 6pm followed by an Introduction to the 4-week workshop and schedule.  Monday morning we begin cobbing! \n\n  \n\n\nFollowing Breakfast\, the morning session lasts 4 hours with a 20-minute snack pause. Lunch break lasts 1.5 hours which includes rest time before the 3-hour afternoon session begins. Mondays\, Wednesdays and Fridays there is a 60-minute lecture\, followed by construction. Tuesdays and Thursdays we start building right after the rest time.  After class in the afternoon there is a 90-minute break before dinner\, in which students are encouraged to stretch\, do yoga\, relax. There is often someone officially or informally leading yoga or some other movement practice in the morning and/or afternoon.  There will also be 3-4 evenings (once a week) after dinner for showing\nslides\, videos and having Course-related discussions. \nThis Intermediate Course will offer practical learning by building a 12m2-15m2 (depending on number of students) curvilinear building. Since the foundation will already be prepared\, the Reciprocal Roof Structure\, Oven and Bench foundations and Floor will begin in week 1. The Cob Wall will be built in weeks 2 and 3 and will include opening and fixed windows\, shelves\, a countertop\, niches\, artistic inserts (bottles\, wood\, etc)\, sculpting\, electrical\, plumbing\, and the roof connection. In Week 3 the Oven will be continued and Roof Sheathing attached as well as other details. In Week 4\, we will plaster the wall\, build the Green Roof covering\, finish the Oven and pour the second floor coat. Lots done in this month! And lots of learning too! Come prepared and rested! \nThose who complete the 28-day Workshop will receive an Intermediate Cobber Certificate of\nCompletion for Cob Walls\, Floor\, Plaster & Roof.  Students in this workshop will also learn how to build a Cob Oven & Bench\, which does not have a Certificate\, but will include foundation. \n  \n  \nSCHEDULE \nThe Intermediate Cob Building Workshop begins on Sunday\, February 2\, 2020 at 4pm with the Opening Circle and Introduction to Site & Project\, the Welcome Dinner and Introduction to the Course.  It ends on Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 after the Closing Circle & Lunch. \nStudents can arrive a day or two before to acclimate and settle in but will need to\ncover their own food needs unless a work trade is accepted by Host. \nThe daily schedule (subject to slight modifications due to climate) will be: \n6:30-7:30 Meditation/Yoga (voluntary)\n7:30-8:30 Breakfast\n8:45-1:00 Class\n1:00-2:30 Lunch\n2:30-5:30 Class\n5:30-7:00 Rest/Yoga\n7:00-8:00 Dinner\n8:00-9:00 Slides/Videos/Discussion (once a week) \n  \nCOURSE CONTENTS \nStudents will learn every phase of building a cob building from foundation through the roof in\nlectures/theory. In addition to the lectures\, slideshows and videos will be shown to support and\nenhance their understanding of cob materials\, cob building\, design\, geography \, budgeting\,\nbusiness options and legal issues.  Students will receive an Intermediate Cobber Certificate\, images of all the teaching posters by email and the CruzinCobGlobal Handbook\, which is a summary of the workshop building steps\, upon Graduation. \nOur hands-on practice will include: \nanalyzing soils and materials making test bricks\ndeciding on correct mixture\ndeciding on best location\nmaking cob w/ partner and solo building with cob\npreparing and inserting fixed and opening windows\npreparing and inserting shelves\ninserting bottle windows\, niches and other objects\ninserting electrical wiring and plumbing in walls\nsculpting\npreparing and applying earthen plaster (1 coat)\npouring an earthen floor\npreparing walls for roof connection\nmaking small-scale cob designs of future projects\, time permitting\nbuilding a foundation for the oven and bench\nbuilding and plastering an oven and bench \nIn addition to Cob Building practices\, the Course material also includes: \nlegal issues about cob\ncost analysis\ncreating a cob business (building/teaching)\nassisting\, interning and teaching with CruzinCobGlobal \n\n\n\nREQUIREMENTS & IMPORTANT INFORMATION \nStudents will need to come prepared for demanding physical work from Day 1. We are open to non-cob activities in the evenings and at night…if the energy is there of course! \n\n  \n! \n\nStudents must tend to their own personal needs\, drink alot of water\, rest when needed and exert\nthemselves at a steady pace. Feel free to share your dietary requirements with CCG or the Host and bring your essential snacks and foods\, pillow and whatever you NEED to be comfortable and happy. In this workshop you will be camping for a month\, unless you would like to pay for indoor accommodations which could be organized though transportation could be an issue.  Staying together keeps the group cohesive and on schedule but we are open to helping you out! \n  \nTRANSPORT & LOGISTICS \nFor non-Chileans arriving by plane\, you can fly into Santiago and continue on to Temuco by plane for an hour (only USD$10 one way on Jetsmart when checked on 12/7!!!!). From Temuco you will take a minibus for 1.5 hours to Villarrica ($19).  The other option is taking a 9-11 hour overnight bus (USD$28) from Santiago to Villarrica or possibly carpooling with Chilean students.  All students will be picked up by Host in Villarrica\, only 17km or a 20-minute drive to the site.  American\, United\, Delta\, LanChile have the best fares from the US. If you have frequent flyer miles it’s only 30\,000 miles roundtrip from the US to Chile!!! Or you can use 15\,000 miles for one way and pay for the return one-way ticket.  Norwegian flies to Argentina from Europe for a very good deal and then JetSmart and Sky are low-budget Chilean and Argentinian airlines for local and cross-border flights.  As the date approaches\, one month out\, we will send you more specific information regarding bus information/schedules and prices or just look online (main companies are Jac\, Turbus and Pullman). Sometimes the plane is cheaper than the bus!!!! \n  \nMEALS\, ACCOMMODATIONS & WHAT ELSE TO BRING \nStudents will be fed 3 high-quality delicious meals a day during the weekdays prepared by experienced cooks.  CruzinCobGlobal hosts always serve amazing food to cob students in gratitude for their hard work! Since this is Chile there will be meat options in the mainly vegetarian fare depending on student’s needs.  We will try to meet people’s requirements of course so it is important to communicate them as soon as possible. On weekends\, food will be available for students to prepare if they are on site. \n\n  \n\n\n\nStudents will be camping in the lovely meadows\, near the water or in the forest.  Compost toilets\, hot and cold showers\, a dining area\, yoga/dance space and a cozy hangout communal area with fire circle will be offered for maximum comfort and enjoyment during this wonderful and transformational time together. SUMMARY:A Complete Introduction to Earthen Building Techniques (Cob\, Earthbag\, Wattle and Daub)
DESCRIPTION:Intro to Ecological Construction \nFor thousands of years\, people have been building their homes out of the dirt beneath their feet. Natural and vernacular building techniques have roots in every culture around the world\, but share the distinction of using local materials\, being energy efficient\, and having a low ecological footprint. Only during the past century have natural building methods been replaced by the construction industry which is characterized by an unsustainable sourcing of non-renewable resources\, energy inefficient design\, and a huge carbon footprint. \nNatural building techniques allows individuals to use their hands and feet to form earth mixed with sand and straw\, a sensory and aesthetic experience similar to sculpting with clay. Natural building is easy to learn\, inexpensive to build\, and lends itself to organic shapes such as curved walls\, arches and niches. Earth homes are cool in summer and warm in winter and maximize the capture of natural sources of energy. Natural building methods don´t contribute to deforestation\, pollution or mining nor depend on manufactured materials or power tools. In this age of environmental degradation\, dwindling natural resources\, and chemical toxins hidden in our homes\, doesn’t it make sense to return to nature’s most abundant\, cheap and healthy building material? \nSummary About Logistics \nThis six day workshop will cover considerations on picking a house site including passive solar design\, building a rubble trench and natural rock and lime mortar foundation\, wattle and daub wall construction\, earth bag construction\, cob construction\, and natural\, earthen plasters. We offer private transportation from the Guatemalan airport to Santiago Atitlan and vice versa. Lodging options include comfortable local hotels or home stays with local families. Included in the price of the workshop is a day-long tour of several communities around Lake Atitlan to experience and learn about other types of natural construction. Also\, participants will have the opportunity to participate in several recreational and cultural activities during the evenings to learn more about the unique culture and history of the Tz´utujil people. \nAbout Lake Atitlan \nLake Atitlan is one of the three major tourist attractions of Guatemala\, sharing the distinction with the ancient Mayan center of Tikal and the classic Spanish colonial city of Antigua. The Lake lies in the Central Highlands of Guatemala\, 80 miles west of Guatemala City and three hours by car along the Pan American Highway. \nLake Atitlan has long been considered by discriminating travelers to be among the most physically beautiful lakes in the world. But\, the magic is not just the Lake. It is also the surrounding volcanoes and escarpments that frame this 130-square kilometer surface of sparkling water. It is the sun and breeze\, playing on the Lake’s surface\, nudging it into revealing its capriciously changeable character. \nThe enchantment of the Lake is also found in the proud but friendly Mayan people living along its shores that hold to the essence of their cultural identities while adapting to modern conveniences that fit their pragmatically adjusting view of the Universe. \nAbout the Tz’utujil People and Santiago Atitlan \nThe Popul Vuh describes the mythic journey and arrival of seven tribes of warriors to a place called Tulan. In this account\, the Tz’utujil are the first of the seven tribes to arrive. Existing evidence indicates that Tz’utujil-speakers once occupied the territory surrounding Lake Atitlán as well as the southern expanse of territory to the coastal lowlands. \nThe word “Tz’utujil” means “Corn Flower.” Today Tz’utujil is spoken in the towns of San Pablo\, San Juan\, San Pedro\, Chicacao\, and Santiago Atitlan. “Atitlan\,” a word of Nahuatl origin\, means “close to the water.” \nSantiago Atitlan is the largest of the 12 lakeside communities and is the principal population center of the Tz’utujil people. Its population is over 32\,000\, with about 95% indigenous. The town is located on the embankment of broken lava at the foot of Volcano Toliman\, across the bay from the pre-Conquest Tz’utujil capital\, Chuitinamit. \nThe survival of the Tz’utujil Maya and the existence of present day Santiago Atitlan\, one of the largest intact communities in the Americas\, give powerful testimony to the spirit of Tz’utujil resistance. \nThe Infrastructure You´re Helping to Build \nOn a pragmatic level\, the Utz´ K´aslimaal Collective seeks to demonstrate a tangible example of sustainable living\, ecological land design\, and natural construction. All of the structures built on the land are made from locally available\, natural materials. In the long term\, we hope to build a center to launch a diverse array of educational programs that allow Western people to learn from indigenous people\, engage in exchanges of mutual solidarity\, and offer a new standard of tourism that involves and values the local community\, culture\, and environment. \nCommunity Involvement \nAs an organization that seeks to belong to and participate in the life of the community that has accepted us\, this workshop will also open spaces for local Tz´utujil youth to learn about natural construction techniques. The migration of young people to North American is a huge issue affecting the local community. Many young people choose to migrate in order to raise money to build a modern home of their own which can be prohibitively expensive. Through helping young people to discover the vernacular\, beautiful and natural methods of construction\, we also hope to add a small contribution towards helping young Tz´utujil people stay in their communities. \nGuatemala has gained international notoriety as a country reeling with violence from youth gangs and drug trafficking.  However\, the vast majority of this violence is confined to the urban areas of the country.  The town of Santiago Atitlan\, where the workshop will be held\, is a quiet\, peaceful town where violence of any type is a rarity.  Workshop participants will be picked up directly from the airport and driven (by van) to the small town of Santiago which is about 3 hours west of Guatemala City. \nNatural Building Techniques to be Taught \nRubble Trench and Stone Stem wall: Instead of relying on concrete footers\, we will explore how you can build a strong\, reliable foundation for your home that offers both structural and drainage functions with nothing but natural materials. \nWattle and Daub: This simple wall construction technique uses a lattice of wood that is then filled in and plastered with earthen materials. It is among the most anti-seismic building materials known. \nEarthbag: Filling polypropylene sacks with stabilized earth allows you to build massive\, thick\, and sturdy walls for your home. We´ll be building a fence out of earthbags during this workshop. \nCob: A mixture of sand\, clay and straw allows you to build the walls to your home that can then be sculpted into any design that you choose. The thick walls also function as a thermal mass to effectively heat your home. \nNatural Plasters: A naturally built structure is nothing but a mud hut until you add the finishing touches of a natural\, earthen or lime-based plaster which turns your mud hut into an earthen home. \nEach day of the workshop will offer a mix of classroom style conceptual/theoretical instruction in the mornings and several hours of practice with the different natural building methodologies that we´ll be using. We will also have the opportunity to visit several naturally built structures around the Lake and process what we´ve been learning at the end of each day. Each participant will receive a booklet with information on the natural building methods that we´ll be covering and electronic copies of several leading books in the natural building niche. \nThe $500 workshop cost covers: \nLodging in a clean and comfortable local hostel with a view of the lake\, or a homestay with a friendly indigenous family. (You can choose which you prefer). \n\nFive (full) days of workshop.\nA day tour of the Lake\, in which you will travel by boat to different towns to see magnificent examples of the very natural building techniques you have been learning about and putting into practice.\nDaily you will be provided with breakfast\, lunch\, dinner\, and refreshments.\nNumerous activities that engage the rich local Tz’utujil culture and that invite you to experience the recreational possibilities of the surrounding environment.\nEducational materials\n\nWhat Is the Utz’ K’aslimaal Collective? \nAlmost all indigenous cultures around the world have a unique understanding of what it means to live the Good Life. For the Mayan Tz´utujil people of Guatemala\, the Good Life\, or Utz´ K´aslimaal\, is characterized by a life of balance\, of proper relationships with the community and the land which holds them\, and the fullness of a simple life lived well. The Utz´ K´aslimaal Collective believes that the indigenous concept of the Good Life and the inimitable worldview of the Mayan peoples from Guatemala especially\, offers needed guidance\, wisdom\, and a practical path forward in the light of the multiple crises we collectively face on a global scale. Through our connections with the indigenous communities and territories around Guatemala\, and through the ecological development of a small piece of land in Santiago Atitlan\, we hope to offer a glimpse into how the Good Life might open pathways for the construction of sustainable\, just\, and balanced communities around the world.

SUMMARY:A Complete Introduction to Earthen Building Techniques (Cob\, Earthbag\, Wattle and Daub)
DESCRIPTION:Come and experience a “cob community” in the cloud forests of El Salvador´s highest mountain. \nThis workshop is being hosted by the Clouds of El Pital Eco-Tourism Cooperative. Our cooperative of five rural families from El Salvador has collectively built eight separate cob houses and cabins to host tourists in the beautiful El Trifinio Biosphere on the slopes of El Salvador´s highest mountain. The nearby cloud forest offers a beautiful site to learn about natural building techniques and sustainable living. \nDuring this workshop\, we will be building a small cob cabin for our eco-tourism cooperative. Participants will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the building process\, from rubble trenches and rock foundations\, building cob and wattle and daub walls\, installing doors and windows\, plastering\, and roof anchoring. \nIf time (and energy) allows\, we will also be re-plastering a finished cob cabin and installing a rocket mass heater into a finished cob house. This workshop offers you the opportunity to see several different cob and wattle and daub structures in different phases of construction. Besides staying in beautifully furnished cob cabins with fantastic views of the El Pital Mountain\, you will also have plenty of hands-on experience to learn a wide variety of natural building techniques. You can see pictures and videos of the cabins we have built on our website: http://nubesdelpital.com/our-cabins/ \nThe workshop costs $500 USD and includes lodging in private cob cabins (check out the links to AirBnb to see where you´ll be staying)\, three meals a day served in our recently finished wattle and daub restaurant\, all the coffee or tea you can drink\, the workshop learning experience\, several free e-books on cob and natural building\, and a hiking trip to the El Pital cloud forest. We will also be visiting all of the cob structures that have been built in our community (over 10 homes/cabins built by 5 families) to see how natural building positively impacts local communities. \nIf you require transportation to and from the Salvadoran airport (about a three and a half hour drive)\, we can arrange that for you (in pickup) for an additional $50 per person (round trip). \nWhile El Salvador receives lots of negative media attention due to violence\, we are located in one of the safest parts of the country that receives a large influx of tourists. Furthermore\, we are a tight knit community of small farmers that enjoy having people come and visit as guests. \nFor more information or to sign up\, you can send us a message on Facebook (www.facebook.com/nubesdelpital) or send us an email at: tobiasroberts20@hotmail.com \nAirBnb links for cabins where you will be lodged during the workshop: \nhttps://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21239316 \nhttps://www.airbnb.com/rooms/21276181 \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Cob Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Dates: May 11 – May 15\, 2020 \nLocation: Jonesborough\, Tennessee \nSign up here: https://www.thiscobhouse.com/introduction-to-cob-workshop-jonesborough-tennessee/ \nCome and join us in beautiful eastern Tennessee for our next Introduction to Cob Workshop! We will be constructing a cob house. A perfect project for beginners and experts alike! You will get the knowledge to build cob projects scaling from smaller things\, such as cob ovens and benches\, up to large projects like homes and buildings. \nThis workshop is a great experience to learn how to build with cob and to get a broad learning overview of natural building techniques. You will get a solid foundation in cob building fundamentals. We will be constructing the walls on a new cob building and studying Natural Building together each day. After this workshop\, you will have the basic experience and confidence to design and build your own simple cob constructions or cob building. \nHands-On Work Topics: \n– How to make cob (learn how to make cob with a mortar mixer) \n– Selecting and testing soils for cob (learn several ways to test your soil composition) \n– Building cob walls (learn my four steps to efficient cob wall building) \n– Creating window and door frames (how to build and attach frames to cob walls) \n– Rammed Earth Demonstration (building rammed earth forms and compaction process) \n– Earthen Plaster (learn to mix and apply earth plaster) \nClassroom and Discussion Topics: \n– Site selection and design (includes Passive Solar design principles) \n– Materials and tools (covers traditional and modern cob building toolset and materials) \n– Rubble trench foundations (Plus general foundation building) \n– Drainage principles (Important: water can be cob’s worst enemy) \n– Basic Electrical and Plumbing integration for cob homes \n– Installing windows and doors \n– Roofing and Bond Beams \n– Natural plasters and finishes (Vapor Permeable / “Breathable” finishes) \n– Overview of Natural Building materials \nThis workshop is a unique experience for people to learn about building cob homes and to get an overview of Natural Building. Not only are there plenty of hands-on lessons to learn from\, but we will also have ample discussion and informal classroom time. Most cob workshops don’t cover this many topics. But here\, you will learn all the core lessons needed to start building from this one workshop! \nPlus – there will be many hours of discussions about building cob homes and natural building throughout the workshop. Its a great way to get your questions answered and brainstorm your building ideas! \nThe workshop will be held at a private property in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. \nEach day will begin at 9:00 AM\, and the days will include hands-on building\, classroom sessions\, discussions\, and learning activities related to cob and natural building topics. We will break for lunch between 12:00 to 1:30 PM\, and we will complete each day at around 4:00 PM. They will be full-packed days! Worth your every penny! \nThe workshop will be taught by Alex Sumerall\, an east coast Natural Builder who has a focus on creating earthen structures that are healthy\, aesthetically pleasing\, and functional for modern life. He is the owner of This Cob House\, LLC\, which is dedicated to teaching people about cob and natural building techniques. Alex has a background in business and advertising\, and has been practicing Natural Building since 2011. He graduated from the Aprovecho School of Natural Building in 2013 in Cottage Grove\, Oregon\, and continues to teach\, present\, consult\, and construct. \nFree Bonus! \nEveryone who signs up for the workshop will receive a printed copy of Alex’s book\, “Build a Cob House: A Step-By-Step Guide”\, and the downloadable PDF version\, FREE! We only make printed copies for workshop students\, so this is your chance to get one. We will be using the book as a lesson guide throughout the workshop too so you can follow along with your book in hand. \nListen to the great things that our workshop participants are saying! \n“The cob workshop was a life-changing experience. I learned a lot about natural building\, not only from Alex’s instruction\, experience and demonstrations\, but from interacting with people from different backgrounds who were a great source of collective knowledge. The hands-on experience was priceless!” Tony Romo\, Texas \n“The Cob Building Workshop was a great investment of my time! It was well organized\, extremely inspiring\, and FUN! Alex was able to explain construction basics to neophytes like me\, yet he could also answer the complex questions asked by the more experienced workshop attendees. I can’t wait until the next workshop!” \nMarybeth Babos\, Tennessee \nLodging \nThere are two options for lodging: free camping on site\, or making reservations at one of the local hotels or AirBnB. Hotels are available in the neighboring towns of Jonesborough\, Gray\, and Johnson City. \nCamping is FREE\, but space is limited on the property so let us know ahead of time if you will be camping or lodging off-site. Campers will have access to a portable toilet and private outdoor shower. \nThe location has electricity & water. Electric outlets are minimal\, with the ability to charge phones & power tools. \nFood \nMeals will not be included in this workshop so participants will need to provide their own food. There are several local restaurants and grocery stores nearby the workshop site. \nEach is responsible for their own meal preparation\, unless decisions are made to share or combine. An hour for lunch is provided\, allowing adequate time for food and a quick nap or trip into town. There is no official kitchen on site. Coolers are welcome and encouraged. \nRecreation & Surroundings \nJonesborough is located near the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in eastern Tennessee. SUMMARY:Intro to Fast Cob & Natural Finishing
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, we introduced this Short Course and it was a great success. You’ll get a full sense of our Fast Cob technique (which allowed 1.5 people to build the 900 sq.ft. house in the photo in just 5 months!)\, and you’ll get to know how to finish buildings naturally\, from base layer to finish layer and even whitewash. Everything we use is completely natural and everything you learn can be done anywhere on the planet. Of course\, without prior building experience\, a 3 day workshop will not give you everything you need to start building your home. But if you’re curious about Fast Cob or cob in general (but don’t want to exhaust yourself)\, this course is for you. Come and let your creative side have fun! \nThe cost of the 5 day Short Course workshops covers all meals (3 hot vegan/vegetarian meals prepared for you for each of the 3 full workshop days\, plus a welcoming dinner and a good-bye breakfast on the final day)\, on-site camping with running\, potable water\, hot showers\, and hands-on instruction. \nYou can apply for any of our workshops by visiting https://cob.lasqueti.ca/workshops.html…simply read through our full descriptions\, then scroll to the bottom of the webpage and fill in our quick and easy application form.  You’ll receive an email confirming your application soon after with all the necessary information to complete your registration.  We only have 4 spots remaining for this workshop. \nFast Cob is a truly revolutionary technique: it can empower anyone (a 60 year old woman with bad knees has been cobbing like mad since her full week workshop last August) to build just about anything\, without exhausting yourself\, going into debt or spending years on a project.  Any building up to 2000 sq.ft. can be built in one season with Fast Cob\, and without machines or thousands of dollars of tools!

SUMMARY:Advanced Cobber Certification: Build a Sauna & Rocket Stove Heater near Mt. Lassen\, California
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATES\, SHORTER WORKSHOP\, LOWER COST!!!!\,\n \nHOST & LOCATION \nOur California hosts are Barbara and Tara\, mother and daughter\, who live in Shingletown\, where they recently bought a five-acre piece of raw land\, completely off-grid\, near Mt Lassen National Park. They have a wonderful view of the volcano\, plus a year round creek and abundant wild life including deer\, turkeys\, cougars\, bears\, bobcats\, foxes\, etc. \n\n  \n\n\nThe workshop site is located in Shingletown\, a small town in Lassen County\, half an hour east of Redding and 3 1/2 hours north of San Francisco. Students will definitely have alot of adventures available in Nature in the midst of the most beautiful counties of California: Shasta\, Trinity\, Klamath\, Mendocino\, and in the surrounding towns and cities on weekends. \nUpon arriving to the land in January\, the only structure was a small unfinished 120 square foot building\, without heat\, water or electricity.  Now it is their humble kitchen.  The creek provides their water needs.\n\nRecently they built another 120 square foot cabin.. using local lumber and insulated with sheep’s wool. It’s very cute!\n\nThey feel this land to be very healing supporting their vision for the land to one day be a healing retreat center. They also have two small green houses and a garden where they are doing their best to cultivate as much high quality food as they can.\n\nInstead of being subjected to the harsh environment of city life\, here one is completely immersed in the sounds and sights of nature.\n\nThey look forward to receiving you all with open hearts and much excitement!\n  \nPROJECT \nThis Advanced Cobber Certification training offers a complete foundation to roof build over a period of 19 days as we will be building a smaller structure\, namely a 60-80 ft2 sauna\, depending on the number of students\, heated by a rocket stove.  The foundation and first floor coats will be built in first three days from the local rock on and near the land using lime and sand mortar.  On Days 4-9 we will build the circular Cob Wall with opening and fixed windows\, niches\, shelves\, bottles\, other useful natural elements inserted into the wall for hanging towels and clothing\, electrical and plumbing fixtures and pipes/housing\, and the roof connection.  On Day 10 we will sculpt the walls and on Day 11 we will sculpt and plaster the wall. Day 12 we will build the rocket heater attached to the sauna wall and Days 13-15 will be for the Roof and second Floor coat. Students will learn ALOT by building every day with continuous instruction both practical hands-on and theoretical using lecture time\, slides and videos.  You will leave fully confident to build your own cob house or someone else’s\, which is your next step after graduating from our training!  This will take you to the next level of understanding and experience after which you will be a much more competent workshop assistant and builder. \n  \nADVANCED COB BUILDING WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThis Intensive 19-day Advanced Cob Building Workshop consists of theoretical instruction\n(lectures with graphics) and construction for 4 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon.\nStudents arrive on Wednesday\, June 10th\, and settle in. The workshop begins at 4pm with an Opening Circle\, a Host Site orientation and Introduction to the Project.  Dinner is served at 6pm and followed by an Introduction to the Workshop.  Thursday morning we begin digging the trench for our Cob Building!!!! \nFollowing Breakfast\, the morning session lasts 4 hours with a 20-minute snack pause. Lunch break lasts 1.5 hours which includes rest time before the 3-hour afternoon session begins. There will be a daily 60-minute lecture either after lunch or after dinner on most days. After class in the afternoon there is a 90-minute break before dinner\, in which students are encouraged to stretch\, do yoga\, relax. There is often someone officially or informally leading yoga or some other movement practice in the morning and/or afternoon.  There will also be a few evenings after dinner for showing slides\, videos and having Course-related discussions.  Most evenings are free and sometimes other students offer informal courses in their specialties and passions.\nThis 19-day Course will offer practical learning by building a complete 60-80ft2 (depending on number of students) curvilinear building from foundation to roof\, as described in the “Project” section above.  Those who complete the Workshop will receive an Advanced Cobber Certificate of Completion for Foundation\, Cob Walls (which includes Door\, Windows\, Shelves\, Art\, Electrical & Plumbing)\, Floor\, Plaster & Roof. \n  \nSCHEDULE \n  \nThe Advanced Cob Building Workshop begins on Wednesday\, June 10th\, 2020 at 4pm with the Opening Circle and Introduction to Site & Project\, the Welcome Dinner and Introduction to the Course.  It ends on Sunday\, June 28\, 2020 after the Closing Circle & Lunch. \nStudents should arrive no later than noon on June 10th. If you need to arrive a day before please let Claudine know so we can check with Host. \nThe daily schedule (subject to slight modifications due to climate) will be: \n6:30-7:30 Yoga/Chi Gong/Meditation                                                                                                                                   7:30-8:30 Breakfast\n8:45-1:00 Class\n1:00-2:30 Lunch\n2:30-5:30 Class\n5:30-7:00 Rest/Yoga\n7:00-8:00 Dinner\n8:00-9:00 Slides/Videos/Discussion (once a week) \n  \nCOURSE CONTENTS \nStudents will learn every phase of building a cob building from foundation through the roof in\nlectures/theory. In addition to the lectures\, slideshows and videos will be shown to support and\nenhance their understanding of cob materials\, cob building\, design\, geography \, budgeting\,\nbusiness options and legal issues. \nOur hands-on practice will include: \ndigging foundation trench\npouring gravel and inserting drainage pipe (if applicable)\nbuilding foundation stemwall\nanalyzing soils and materials\nmaking test bricks\ndeciding on correct mixture\ndeciding on best location\nmaking cob w/ partner and solo\nbuilding with cob\npreparing and inserting the door\npreparing and inserting fixed and opening windows\npreparing and inserting shelves\ninserting bottle windows and other objects\ninserting electrical wiring and plumbing in walls\nsculpting\npreparing and applying earthen plasters (2 coats)\npouring an earthen floor (2 layers)\npreparing walls for roof connection\nbuilding roof frame\nbuilding roof covering\nmaking small-scale cob designs of future projects\, time permitting \nIn addition to Cob Building practices\, the Course material also includes: \nlegal cob construction practices\ncost analysis\ncreating a cob business (building/teaching)\nassisting\, interning and teaching with CruzinCobGlobal \n  \nREQUIREMENTS & IMPORTANT INFORMATION \n  \nStudents will need to come prepared for physical labor from Day 1. \nThis includes: \nWork clothes appropriate for the country and climate we are in\nWork boots or other closed-toe shoes\nFlip-flops for cobbing days\nRubber dishwashing gloves (for lime mortar)\nWork Gloves\nTape Measure\nBox Cutter\nCarving Knife\nWood Hand Saw (cheap)\, Level (2ft)\, Hammer (if possible)\nEar Plugs (roof week)\n4”-6” Diameter Round Plastic Container Lids (plastering)\nGood Moisturizer\nHat\nSunglasses\nSafety Glasses\nWater Bottle\nNotebook/Pen/Camera\nSample of Your Soil (Optional) \n\nThese workshops are designed for people that want to learn how to build a complete structure fromstart to finish in a professional manner and amount of time. They are very intensive and\, while we\nmake time for yoga\, stretching\, dancing\, music\, relaxing….all students are expected to be present and participating in all building/learning hours unless ill or have some other significant reason. This is\nbecause we design the size of the building and organize the structure of the workshop in accordance\nwith the number of students and when people are absent it impacts the whole group and the other\nstudents have to work harder. In addition Instructors try to set up building work according to students’ preferences and learning needs. \nThat being said\, the workshop intensity also changes throughout the 19 days. The  foundation days break people in with the work of moving\, lifting\, rolling and placing rocks and is a new and demanding physical experience for most students. They also include the first layers and coat of cob floor. The 6 days of of cob making and building are similar to the rock foundation week in physical demand but are more flowing and active in movement and cardiovascular exercise. Then students tap into their creative source and design and sculpt the walls and around niches\, shelves\, windows\, etc.  Plastering follows sculpting and is also an enjoyable lightweight physical experience that lends itself to talking and sharing at the wall in a meditative rhythm as the students have bonded and shared deeply through a variety of experiences for this time. With the roof\, there is a change of pace from the earthen building work including carpentry skills\, power tools\, hammering\, screwing\, trimming\, etc. But now the workshop is in its final stretch and there is a boost of energy to wrap up the green roof and the second floor coat\, the grand finale on the last day. In this workshop we have a special bonus of including a rocket stove workshop for the heating of the sauna. \n\nFor students wanting a more mellow slow-paced cob experience along with time for personal\nexploration and experimentation\, these workshops are not for you. However you can find a more\nsuitable workshop online that is usually for a shorter period building a garden wall\, a bench\, a\ncompost toilet or some other small-scale project. \nStudents are required to read “The Hand-Sculpted House” before the workshop begins and any\nother book they find\, as well as watching videos on YouTube\, especially the ones posted on\nCruzinCobGlobal’s website under Gallery to get an idea of what is expected. Please bring your\nbook(s). \n\n\n\nStudents must tend to their own personal needs\, drink alot of water\, rest when needed and exert themselves at a steady pace. Students who cannot do the strenuous physical work should let us\nknow before the workshop begins so we can adjust appropriately. It is totally OK to come for the lecture/theory part\, and then help the building part in less physically demanding ways\, ie cutting\nstraw\, sifting for plaster\, hammering nails into frames or shelves\, sculpting\, plastering\, cutting bottles. There is alot to do besides making and building with cob!!!! \nFinally\, please bring a watch or use your phone to be prompt and ready for each part of the Course\nincluding meals. Feel free to share your dietary needs with CCG or the Host and bring your\nessential snacks and foods\, pillow and whatever you NEED to be comfortable and happy. Feel free\nto also bring slides\, videos\, movies and books to share\, as well as a sample of your soil to test. \n  \nTRANSPORT & LOGISTICS \nStudents without a personal vehicle or not carpooling (we will organize a carpooling list a month before the start date) can take a bus (Greyhound/Trailways) to Redding or even fly in to the local airport. Students can also fly into San Francisco or Sacramento and take a bus or train from there.  Usually all students can get rides from other students to the site from their home base (if in driveable distance) or from the closest city or town along the way. Since this is California there is no lack of amazing vegetarian food\, which will be the basis of our menu.  Students that have non-vegetarian requirements can bring personal items to complete their diet and other requirements can be presented to the cooks a month before the start date so they can make sure to have what is needed.  We will try to meet people’s requirements of course so it is important to communicate them as soon as possible. On weekends\, food will be available for students to prepare if they are on site\, because the cooks will be off-duty.\n\n\n\n\nStudents will be camping close by in the lovely meadows\, or in the forest.  Compost toilets\, hot and cold showers\, a dining area\, yoga/dance space and a cozy hangout communal area will be offered for maximum comfort and enjoyment during this wonderful and transformational time together. The site has normal cell phone service which students can hotspot to their computers if desired.. \nFor those not wanting to camp\, there may be a few indoor options available on the land for a reasonable fee. Please inquire. \nOur hosts’ additional recommendations to bring are: \nBathing Suit for lakes\, rivers and hot springs \nHiking/Backpacking gear if desired for weekends \nWarm jacket for evening time \nRaingear (occasional rainshowers) \nMusical Instruments \nChocolate! \nThere are many local stores in case you forget something! \n  \n  \nINSTRUCTOR \nClaudine Desiree is the original “Cob Queen” of Santa Cruz\, where she founded the original “Sunflower Cob Building” which quickly morphed into the California-based “Cruzin’ Cob”\, the cob workshop and building business that evolved over a decade.  Once her three sons were “out of the house”\, she went for her dream of traveling around the world on a bike teaching cob workshops everywhere every few months to continue supporting herself by offering up what she loves in the countries and languages she is passionate about.  To work internationally with no home base required a new name and a website\, hence CruzinCobGlobal was born naturally and appropriately and\, after 5 years on the road\, Claudine has finally found a new home….for now.  On the island of São Miguel in the Azores (where are the Azores?) she will establish a home and a small Cob Village called “Quinta da Vida Boa” for retreats\, workshops\, education and just plain chillin’in with friends and family!!!!  CruzinCobGlobal will continue to do the important work of building the best houses and best communities ever of course… with new Teachers hitting the Cob road in 2020 as CCG-trained students begin leading workshops and builds around the world. Claudine will also keep teaching in her favorite places and spreading the Cob everywhere\, with more focus on the Azores land and project now.  California will always be one of those favorite places\, her and her children’s home for 20 years. And the demand to learn Cob in California is always growing with the fires and earthquakes threatening conventional houses.  Africa\, Asia and Eastern Europe are calling too! And the best part is we have a “legal” Cob Code to use anywhere in the world thanks to the CRI architects’ and engineers’ hard work and focus! \n\nViva Hansen has been cobbing since the age of 9 when he took “Cob Building” as a homeschooling class at home!  After college he began taking it more seriously and accompanied his mother\, the Cob Queen (Claudine) on a GlobalCobTrotting world bike tour through Europe and Africa when he honed his building\, teaching\, language and international rapping skills.  Viva has assisted and taught cob building and oven workshops in various countries and languages and\, while he especially enjoys creating ovens/outdoor eating spaces and focusing on all things related to rocket stoves and mass heaters\, his Heart is in any kind of Cob Building. Viva loves the workshop ambiance and the transformational power of “Cob & Community” it provides!  Viva is also a certified massage therapist\, writer\, musician\, videographer\, NVC student and avid traveller who is working on creating a program for mentoring young men in the art of living a healthy\, balanced and fulfilling life in these challenging times.  We are SO fortunate to have Viva on the team! \n  \n  \nREGISTRATION & PAYMENT \n  \nThe fee for the 19-day Advanced Cobber Certificate Course which includes tuition\, camping and all meals (including Sudays when students will prepare for themselves) is: \n$1650 paid by June 1st\, 2020 \nPayment can be made by bank transfer in USD or Euros\, using Transferwise\, Paypal\, Zelle or Venmo. To hold your spot in this workshop you will need to pay the full amount or a 50% deposit that will be non-refundable after MAY 1st\, 2020.  The balance will be due by May 20th. Please contact claudine@cruzincobglobal.org to register. \nWe always offer four work trade discounts\, 2 in the kitchen making breakfast in the morning and 2 helping prepare the site in the morning before breakfast. Each work trade is for one hour a day during the 16 workshop days for $10 off per day or $160 off either the food cost or the tuition cost.  Work traders need to pay a  50% deposit at the time of their registration to guarantee their spot. To apply for these work trade positions please contact claudine@cruzincobglobal.org  as soon as possible because these are the first spots to go. \nWE LOOK FORWARD TO DANCING WITH YOU IN THE MUD!!!!

It’s a focused and jam-packed workshop that combines elements of a community barn raising with tried and true natural building techniques taught by talented instructors. \nCordwood cob is a technique that uses cordwood like bricks and cob like mortar and allows one to build much higher in a day compared to using just cob. A layer of cob by itself can be built about a foot high per day before needing to set and dry some; by using cordwood-cob and with enough hands we can make a full-height building. The wood\, clay\, and sand for this build are all locally sourced. \nRosewater Ranch is a budding community on 140 acres backing up to National Forest in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains outside of Reno\, NV.  On the ranch Permaculture practices abound\, goats\, chickens\, & turkeys roam\, and there’s lots to absorb while there. The cabin we build will be round-ish\, measure ~120 interior square feet\, have a loft and green roof. It will be used as a studio and guest quarters. \nParticipants will learn: \n\n\nBasics of a rubble trench foundation (the trench and earthbags will be done ahead of the workshop) \n\n\nHow to mix cob \n\n\nHow to set doors and window frames \n\n\nHow to plumb and trim walls \n\n\nHow to build with cordwood and cob \n\n\nHow to attach a roof and make a simple green roof \n\n\nHow to make and apply a light straw-clay plaster base coat \n\n\nIf you’ve been interested in learning about natural building\, have some experience and want to improve\, or maybe don’t have the time and money to dedicate to a full\, longer workshop\, this might be a great option for you. You’ll leave with a basic understanding of what it takes to put a complete cabin together and can expect to enjoy your time in a beautiful setting with lots of great people and food. \nDaily Flow: \nFriday \n12:00 – arrival and camping set up\, light lunch \nHands-on instruction in cordwood cob basics including mixing cob.  We’ll also discuss how to build a rubble trench and earthbag stemwall and a tamped earth floor \n7:00 – Dinner and fun \nSaturday \n6:00 – breakfast \n6:45 – begin building \n12:00 – lunch \n5:00 – raise the roof! \n7:00 – dinner and celebration \nSunday \n8:00 – breakfast \n9:00 – debrief and Q and A \n10:00 – light straw clay plaster \n1:00 – lunch \nAfternoon departure \n  \nOne Day\, Part 2 \nPlastering and Earthen Floor Workshop \nJuly 17-19\, we’ll plaster the cabin’s walls and put in a finished earthen floor during a two-day workshop. Participants in the “One Day” are invited back for that weekend at a discounted rate of $40 (includes camping and meals). \nContact Kyle for more details.
