SUMMARY:Advanced Fast Cob/Roofing for Fast Cobbers!
DESCRIPTION:After building almost 20 roofs of 5 different materials\, including Lasqueti’s Arts Centre\, it’s time to share these skills with you.  I’ve delayed this offering because being off the ground is inherently dangerous\, but this year we’ll have a roof design that uses two different “shed” styles that will be easily accessible from low\, stable scaffolding.  Of course\, safety will be foremost in our minds at all times. \nThe roof itself will be made of metal\, the longest-lasting (other than slate) and lowest cost (over its lifespan) material currently available.  We’ll see and examine liquid membrane roofs\, hand-split cedar shake roofs\, and many other metal roof examples in between our workshop sessions. \nEvery roof has multiple layers\, and we’ll experience installing all the standard ones: the main decking\, tar paper\, and then the metal itself.  We’ll also install a glass skylight that is far from standard but has proven to work like a charm without the exorbitant cost of building in and buying commercial skylights. \nOur Workshops begin on a Thursday evening with a welcoming dinner and end with a Farewell breakfast on Monday before you depart on the 11 am ferry. \nFood\, Food\, and more Food! \nEvery workshop day\, we start with a hot\, hearty breakfast (with a Q&A)\, after which we start learning.  In the morning\, two hands-on sessions sandwich a hearty snack break.  A hot\, hearty lunch (with another Q&A session)\,  to make sure we have the strength and stamina to absorb all the learning we can\, precede a longer afternoon session.  After an hour break to clean-up\, a hot gourmet dinner accompanies a daily recap on lessons learned and sets the stage for an evening discussion among ourselves or with an invited guest from the Community. \nPlease visit our workshop page for all the details and to fill in our online application.  It is also part of our Complete Builder’s Programme.  This course will complete your learning journey and allow you to complete your own natural buildings! \nWe offer discounts to those who register in pairs or who take multiple workshops with us.  Please note that all of our fees are in Canadian dollars; if your currency is US or Euro\, our fees are significantly less (30-50% less!).

DESCRIPTION:The Roofing for Cobbers 3 day intensive workshop is new for 2024!  After building almost 20 roofs of 5 different materials\, including Lasqueti’s Arts Centre\, it’s time to share these skills with you.  I’ve delayed this offering because being off the ground is inherently dangerous\, but this year we’ll have a roof design that uses two different “shed” styles that will be easily accessible from low\, stable scaffolding.  Of course\, safety will be foremost in our minds at all times. \nThe roof itself will be made of metal\, the longest-lasting (other than slate) and lowest cost (over its lifespan) material currently available.  We’ll see and examine liquid membrane roofs\, hand-split cedar shake roofs\, and many other metal roof examples in between our workshop sessions. \nEvery roof has multiple layers\, and we’ll experience installing all the standard ones: the main decking\, tar paper\, and then the metal itself.  We’ll also install a glass skylight that is far from standard but has proven to work like a charm without the exorbitant cost of building in and buying commercial skylights. \nOur Workshops begin on a Thursday evening with a welcoming dinner and end with a Farewell breakfast on Monday before you depart on the 11 am ferry. \nFood\, Food\, and more Food! \nEvery workshop day\, we start with a hot\, hearty breakfast (with a Q&A)\, after which we start learning.  In the morning\, two hands-on sessions sandwich a hearty snack break.  A hot\, hearty lunch (with another Q&A session)\,  to make sure we have the strength and stamina to absorb all the learning we can\, precede a longer afternoon session.  After an hour break to clean-up\, a hot gourmet dinner accompanies a daily recap on lessons learned and sets the stage for an evening discussion among ourselves or with an invited guest from the Community. \nPlease visit our workshop page for all the details and to fill in our online application.  This course will complete your learning journey and allow you to complete your own natural buildings! \nWe also offer discounts to those who register in pairs or who take multiple workshops with us.

SUMMARY:Focusing on Natural Building Finishing…the Fast Cob Way!

DESCRIPTION:The Fundamentals of Fast Cob \nAt a relaxed pace\, we’ll learn and practice mixing and building Fast Cob.  As the week progresses\, you’ll gain the skills\, confidence\, and inspiration to build your own structures. \nIn 2018\, a workshop of 4 people built a 12′ high by 8′ wide wall…and that was only half of what we accomplished.  Last year\, a workshop of 6 built a 16′ x 12′ wood shed (6′ tall) and got the rafters on! \nEvery workshop day\, we start with a hot\, hearty breakfast (with a Q&A)\, after which we start cobbing.  Two morning\, hands-on learning sessions sandwich a hearty snack break\,  A hot\, hearty lunch (with another Q&A session) precede two afternoon sessions to ensure that we absorb all the learning we can.  After cleaning ourselves up\, a hot dinner accompanies a daily recap on lessons learned and sets the stage for an evening discussion among ourselves or with an invited guest from the Community. \nEvery Fundamentals of Fast Cob Workshop includes:\nNatural Building Design: working with nature to make long lasting\, beautiful structures;\nFast Cob: how to mix it and build with it\, incorporating windows and doors\, electrical and plumbing;\nFoundations and Roofs: various options and simple\, elegant designs;\nFinishing: learn how to make and use two natural plasters that are safe to work with\, and extremely durable.  You’ll also learn how to whitewash with natural lime. \nAfter every lunch break\, while we digest\, we take learning tours of existing buildings to look at foundations\, electrical\, plumbing\, floors\, roofs\, and general design.  You get everything you need to go off and start building on your own because we design every workshop around you and your specific needs! \nIf you were disappointed to see this workshop sold out\, we just had a cancellation and two spots have opened up!

DESCRIPTION:All of our Natural Building Workshops are led and facilitated by the builder of a 900 sq.ft. split level Cob Home.  This home was built in 5 months during 2016.  About 80% of it was built by one person – your workshop instructor – on his own.  He had help putting up the floor and roofing beams as well as the giant windows and skylights\, but 90% of the cobbing was done alone.  That’s the power of this technique that we call Fast Cob! \nCompare that to his first building\, built with the traditional West Coast Cob technique: a 64 sq.ft. utility shed that needed 28 people and 2 building seasons to complete. \nCovering all the Basics: At a relaxed pace\, we’ll learn and practice mixing and building with Fast Cob!  As the week progresses\, you’ll gain the skills and inspiration to build your own structures.  This year\, I’m planning to show you how fast this technique is by starting and completing a 100+ sq.ft. wood shed – with a loft – in just 6 days!  Last year\, a workshop of 4 people built a 12′ high by 8′ wide wall…and that was only half of what we accomplished. \nIn between hands-on Fast Cob! sessions\, we’ll look at foundations\, electrical\, plumbing\, upper floors\, roofs\, and general design.  You get everything you need to go off and start building on your own because we design every workshop around you and your needs!

SUMMARY:Intro to Fast Cob! and Natural Finishing
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we’ll be getting walls from rough cob to finished beauty.  We’ll mix and use a “filler” coat of plaster until the wall is the depth and smoothness we want\, then we’ll cover that with a natural plaster called “Ditema”: cow manure and clay.  We’ll have a variety of applicators\, so you can play with texture and finish.  Once that dries\, we’ll mix and tint a hydrated lime paint to finish it all off. \nWe’ll also mix up some Fast Cob! so you can see how easy our technique is.  Just be warned\, this short course is not enough to go off and start building on your own without prior experience.  But if you’re curious about Fast Cob! or cob in general\, this course is for you.  Come and let your creative side have fun! \n
