SUMMARY:Large Community Cob Oven
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an immersive and hands-on 4-day workshop where you’ll learn the art of building a large cob oven from the ground up. Cob ovens are not only functional for baking delicious wood-fired pizzas and bread but also add a touch of rustic charm to your outdoor space. Guided by experienced natural builder Morgan Caraway of Sustainable Life School (https://sustainablelifeschool.com/)\, this workshop will empower you with the skills and knowledge needed to create your own functional and aesthetically pleasing cob oven. \nWorkshop Details: \nDay 1: Foundation and Base The journey begins with understanding the importance of a solid foundation. Participants will learn about site selection\, materials sourcing\, and the basics of cob mixture. This day we will build the foundation. \nDay 2: Forming the Oven Dome Discover the secrets of shaping the oven dome to achieve optimal heat retention and distribution. We will spend day 2 forming the dome and adding the first earthen layer. \nDay 3: Insulation and Aesthetics This day delves into the critical aspects of insulation to ensure your oven retains heat efficiently. Explore various insulation techniques and materials while gaining insight into the final plastering process. \nDay 4: Finishing Flourish and Culmination On this final day\, participants will collectively put the finishing touches on the cob oven and master the art of earthen plastering. By the end of the day\, you’ll have a completed cob oven to admire and take pride in. \nLogistics: \nCoffee will be available by 9am each day\, and the day’s tasks will start shortly thereafter. Lunch will be served midday\, and we will end our workday by about 5 pm. \nLunch will be vegan and gluten free with options for adding meat and/or cheese. \nFree camping is available onsite\, but space is limited so reach out as soon as possible to arrange camping. There will be noise from the road as we are off of a highway\, so just be aware! \nSee our Lodging Options page for more lodging resources. \nWhy Attend: By participating in this 4-day cob oven workshop\, you’ll gain the knowledge\, skills\, and confidence to embark on your own cob building projects! Whether you’re a seasoned builder or new to the world of cob\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to engage with fellow enthusiasts\, learn from experts\, and create a functional piece of culinary art. \nWe will be under the shelter of a large timber frame structure that we will be building on Saturday September 9th. Join us for this preliminary shelter workshop\, and be a part of the process from the very beginning as we build our outdoor kitchen!
