DESCRIPTION:Learn the techniques you need to build a low-carbon\, energy-efficient home in any climate. This workshop teaches the hands-on skills needed to construct both high-insulation (straw bale\, light straw-clay\, slip-and-chip) and thermal mass walls (cob)\, using low-cost\, locally available materials including clay soil\, straw\, and wood. These wall systems are easy to learn\, inexpensive\, beautiful\, durable\, and fire-resistant. Which one you choose depends on your climate\, design\, and local resources – or build a hybrid home utilizing multiple wall systems to maximize efficiency and design flexibility! \nMost of each day will be spent constructing an actual hybrid home. Hands-on building will be supplemented with daily lectures and slide shows that provide the theoretical understanding you will need to design your home: finding and testing clay soils and other local resources; foundations\, drainage and moisture protection; passive solar design; structural and thermal properties of different natural wall systems; how to develop your own successful recipes for cob and natural plasters\, and more!  \nCamp under the trees on this remote and peaceful community property in Washington’s Okanagan Valley. Smith has nearly three decades experience with natural building; he has taught over 120 hands-on workshops ranging from one-day earthen oven workshops to three-month professional trainings\, and has designed or built close to 100 natural-building projects using many different techniques\, including cob\, straw bale\, straw-clay\, wattle-and-daub\, rice-crete\, earthen floors\, natural plasters\, and many more. Energy efficiency\, passive solar design\, empowerment of people through simple\, accessible techniques\, and the regenerative use of locally available materials are always the focus of his work. In 1993\, he helped found The Cob Cottage Company in Oregon; the next year\, he organized the first Natural Building Colloquium. He is a founding director of The Cob Research Institute\, which developed the first building code for cob. He is co-author of The Hand-Sculpted House and The Art of Natural Building. He finds writing and teaching about natural building to be an excellent way to empower people to make positive changes in their lives and for the planet. SUMMARY:The Art of Natural Plasters: Clay & Lime Finishes
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Michael G. Smith\, Athena Steen\, Robert Kolden and Avani Leitz\n  \n\n\nThe Art of Natural Plasters workshop is an immersive learning experience that focuses on the use of traditional and natural materials to create beautiful\, durable and sustainable finishes for walls and other surfaces. Learn from instructors with over a century of combined experience in natural building and fine finishes! Participants will learn about the various types of clay and lime plasters and finishes\, the techniques for applying them\, and the benefits of using natural materials in building and design. These techniques are well-suited to natural wall systems such as straw bale and cob\, but are equally appropriate over conventional materials such as drywall.\n​ \nHands-on experience is a key component of the workshop. Approximately six hours each day will be spent mixing and applying plaster to a real natural home\, allowing participants to develop application skills while plastering on different substrates and experimenting with various finishing techniques and textures. Lectures and discussions will cover the health benefits of natural finishes\, how to select the most appropriate plaster type for your situation\, the importance of proper surface preparation\, what tools you will need\, how to source the best ingredients and develop and test your own plaster recipes\, how to calculate the amount of materials you will need\, how to maintain and repair natural plasters\, and how to design your home to minimize maintenance over time. \n​ \nThis workshop will cover a wide range of natural wall finishes including:\n\n\nStraw-clay base coat plasters ideal for protecting straw bales and for sculptural relief work\n\n\nLime scratch\, brown and finish coats for wet and weather-exposed surfaces\n\n\nSmoothed and polished clay finishes suitable for all interior walls\n\n\nLime-clay combinations\n\n\nSgraffito – the art of carving through multiple layers of different plasters to create a textured and multi-colored design\n\n\nSimple\, durable clay paints you can make yourself\n\n\nTadelakt – a highly polished and waterproof lime plaster from Morrocco\n\n\nAt the end of the workshop\, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of natural plaster and finish techniques and the confidence to apply these techniques in their own projects. In addition to the practical skills and knowledge gained during the workshop\, participants will also benefit from the opportunity to connect with a diversity of people and learn from experienced instructors in a supportive and collaborative environment.
