If anyone knows of any cob building workshops in Texas coming up could you please let me know. I am a wife & mother of 3 children and I am very interested in someday building an earthen home for our family. I will also volunteer my time to help anyone that will be building a natural home near south Texas.

Hi! I’m a 25 yr old graduate in sculpture from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. I’ve spent some time on farms and with at-home gardening and I know my way around a wood shop. i am a quick and eager learner and am definitely an asset to any work environment! 🙂 Currently, I work for an artist in Manhattan and am desperately seeking a new way of life faaaarrr away from the city. I am looking for experience in cob building, preferably in a space where I can get some farming experience or (this is a long shot) some yoga in as well…!
Looking forward to hearing back from you and figuring out how I can help you out!
    All best,
    A

Hi Kelly. My husband and I are planning to buy land and build our own Cob home soon, we live in Northwest Arkansas. I can’t say exactly when but probably within a year. I haven’t found any Cob workshops or even anyone building a Cob home in this area who would like some help so if you hear of any, please let me know. We are willing to travel under the right circumstances. I did find a family who was building and needed help but they were almost finished and 5 hours away so we decided it wouldn’t be worth the drive, we would like to learn from the beginning. I would also love to chat with you about Cob.

    • Kelly says:

      Jeannette,

That’s awesome! I would so like to hear of how the build goes, when it goes. And if I hear of any opportunities in learning about Cob in this area I will be sure to let you know. Would you mind giving me you email address so that we could converse more easily? I am truly fresh on this subject (just found out about it yesterday) and would love to start up a dialogue with you. If you are uncomfortable with that, I understand, though.

    • Brian says:

      Hi, Jeannette –
I just found this message and am in NWA and interested in cob building. Did you ever build the home you mentioned? I’d love to learn about your experience.
      Thanks!

    Hello!

I am a student at Hendrix College, just finding out about Cob Building but it pulled at my soul strings, so I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there near Conway or Little Rock, AR who needs help with a project, I just want to learn all I can as I now aspire (my first aspiration in my existence) to one day build my own Cob house. If anyone out there would even just like to chat with me about Cob, I’d be down for that too.

    Whatever the universe brings,
    Kelly

    • Hi Kelly ~ Wish we were closer to Little Rock. Your enthusiasm is so refreshing. We will be working on foundation on October 1st, and will be hosting a “From the Ground Up with Cob” workshop that will run from the 1st thru the 5th. As much as is reasonably possible, we try to prepare you to be able to go home and build your own cob home after taking the five day workshop with us. We need a few folks willing to come out the weekend before and help us get ready in exchange for attending the workshop. The thing is, we are 15 minutes outside the town of Berea, KY. So it’s nine hours from Little Rock. Feel free to contact me if you might be interested at 606-256-8954. And you can check out the workshop details at http://www.disputantacob.com Regards ~ Diane

  • Jessica says:

Hi! We’re looking for a unique situation with a landholder who would like a cob cottage built on their land within 1 ½ hours of Portland, OR. My husband trained in natural building with Ianto Evans at the Cob Cottage Company, and we are ready to build. The ideal situation would be someone who would like us to build a strawbale and earthen home on their land and allow us to live in the structure until 2015 at which time we will be moving. At that time, the structure would be turned over to the landholder. We are a family with one two-year-old daughter.

We have experience with farming, gardening, bees, chickens, permaculture, etc. and would ideally continue with these practices on the land. Currently we are homeowners in Portland. I am a student in school for Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (graduating in 2015) and I love to cook as well as work with the land. My husband is a science teacher and handyman who is ready to focus on building and farming. Prior to teaching he worked on a large farm for a number of years. Part of what appeals to us about natural home building is the community it brings together. We enjoy community and sharing in food and merriment with friends. There are many possibilities for exchange or barter within this framework, so if you want to talk details or brainstorm please send a message. Thanks for reading : )

      Jessica,
I currently live in Bend, Oregon and I am looking to relocate to the area around Salem, preferably within 1/2 hour of the city. My girlfriend of 3+ years lives there now and has a great job. We are looking to get into a more sustainable way of living (cob building, permaculture, gardening, bees, etc) . We would be interested in collaborating with the right people on a project like you describe.

Ideally, we purchase a small, affordable acreage and work out a rent/trade type of arrangement. There are some obstacles to our goal, that I won’t post online, but I would be willing to discuss any/all ideas with like minded folks. Thank you!

  • Gary Miick says:

Hey guys, hope all is well with your adventures. I noticed your flyer in the Talent library regarding the upcoming workshops here in Talent. I was wondering if scholarships or work exchange is a possibility for the classes. Iam extremely interested in building with earth, no wonder, as my Eskimo ancestors lived in earth lodges. I am currently looking for a way to do some good with my life, and Earth related activities must be part of that good. I do not wish to benefit myself only, but to gather enough knowledge to help those who may be less fortunate with alternative housing. A great many people could help themselves with this construction method as well as conservation of Earths resources. I would give any and everything possible to work trade this workshop. This is certainly a valuable tool in todays world, one that I am certain will become more popular and mainstream as time moves on; and I want to be part of the change that is developing around us.It goes without saying that of course i would like to somehow make a living doing Earth related activities that do some good.

    • Wanda Davis says:

Hi Gary , I myself feel the same as you. I want to help others learn this/but I myself need to first. I am very interested,,been doing a lot of reading on it. I want to build my own little “happy place”…and live debt free. As a single woman (and a smidgen older than the usual pioneers), I am sure I will need assistance. But, I am not afraid of hard work,,,just know my limits. I am planning to build in SW corner of NC in the next couple of years. I am a travel nurse and this would come in quite handy. Low maintenance and safety are a must. As I work to become deft free, I would LOVE to travel to and help with workshops. Thats my kind of fun,,,other than exploring new places.
I hope to see you at one of these workshops one day soon. Best regards.

        Wanda,
