We will start working on our earthbag/cob/strawbale/reticulated roof home in Alaska in 4-6 weeks — as soon as the weather permits. Our work will include milling lumber from deadfall and a very few harvested trees on the property, finishing the cob bench on our Rocket Mass Heater, earthen plastering, finishing the sod roof, and more. If you are interested in seeing Alaska, and would like to take a little time to enhance your natural building skills, please let me know.

As much as is reasonably possible, we try to prepare you to be able to go home and build your home after attending a week long workshop with us. We are looking for a few folks to help out a week before our most popular workshop, “From the Ground Up with Cob,” which is coming up April 27 – May 1 and will include:
    Natural Stone Foundation,
    Building Cob Walls
    Sculptural ~ Artistic Cob
    Natural Plaster / Lime Plaster
The work trade is a week of work getting ready for the workshop, in exchange for registration to the workshop the next week. Please see our web site for more information, and call me or contact me through our web site if you would like to get more information.

We will be resuming work on our natural-construction off-the-grid homesite in Alaska at the middle to end of April, and will be working on it until mid-June. We are finishing an earthbag cabin and will be doing a garage/workshop structure next. Ultimately we plan to have a house, a studio, a dojo, and guest quarters, in addition to organic and forest gardens. Our plans for this next season include some more earthbag work, natural plasters, strawbale construction (both load bearing and infill), light-straw insulation, another reticulated roof, finishing earthen roofs, earth berm insulation, timber framing, and (if we have enough time or enough helping hands) finish our cob bench that goes with our rocket heater. We will make our composting toilet operational this year. We may also build another rocket heater for our next structure. If we have time we will also install our solar panels, and build a rocket heater for our bath tub, but both are probably a little optimistic.

We use logs from our property for timbers, and mill our own boards from those logs. We only purchase materials if we absolutely have to. This includes things like earth bag tubing, screws, etc. As much as we can, though, we get from our property. Our second choice is locally produced, or recycled.

We will also install our windows and doors (all recycled). While in Europe we learned how to make what are called “Tilt and Turn” windows and doors — they are hinged so that they can tilt inward (hinged at the bottom) for a little ventilation, or swing inward (hinged at the side) to open wide. The technology in Europe for this is now very sophisticated, but the old way of doing can be easily done with simple tools, and that is how we plan to do it.

We are on the road system of Alaska (over 90% of the communities here do not have road access), so you have easy access to places like Anchorage. However, we are at the end of the road in a very rural part of Alaska, so we also get the benefit of being in the wilderness…. We have 1.6 acres sharing a border with a 20+ acre all-natural reserve. There is a creek 1/8 mile from us and a large river 1/4 mile away, and the ocean is 3 miles away. We see lots of wildlife on and near our property: moose, porcupine, bear, wolves, and other wild critters. The river is a major salmon fishing spot.

Our building season will be rather short because of family obligations, but that opens an opportunity to spend some time touring Alaska, fishing, or working on another project. We have friends that are building an earth-ship, and close connections with an organic intentional community of about 60 people that are actively involved in natural building, gardening and farming. The weather here is usually nice at least through August, and often into October, so you will have a good opportunity to explore, work, or go on an adventure.

Besides helping hands for the projects, and individuals eager to learn natural building skills, we could also use someone to help with cooking and other support tasks. We can provide training in macrobiotic and vegetarian cooking. So, if you, or a partner, would like to experience the real Alaska, but are not interested in building, there is a place for you as well!

Our facility, at the moment, is best described as rustic. We will be staying in a tent, and, until these structures are done, all we can offer is a tent. We will provide wholesome vegetarian food (mostly macrobiotic), a wonderful and broad-based learning opportunity, and a serene and joyful working environment with opportunities for play. There are a lot of other things we can provide, such as Chi-Gung training, deep discussions, historical tours, Reiki and other training, and much more, if you are interested.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn natural building in an ecologically conscientious environment, while having a truly wilderness experience and an Alaskan adventure! Come join us…

    • Corrine says:

Hey Dale, I am planning a trip to Alaska now. What part of the state are you in and what part of June will y’all be wrapping up?

    • Mandy says:

      Hey Dale,

I live in Fairbanks and want to get more involved in natural building. I was looking for a workshop, but I can’t find any in Alaska, or even northern climates. I am interested in exploring strawbale/cob or any other natural building techniques that might work up here in the far north – I’m looking to try out a few things here in the Interior. Where are you located? Are you looking for short-term help? I could probably head down for a weekend to a week, depending on where you are. Do you know of any Alaskan natural building resources/schools? Thanks!

      • Dale says:

        Hi, Mandy,

We are on the Kenai Peninsula, in Kasilof. We’re about 20 minutes by car south of Kenai and Soldotna.

A week, or a weekend would be fine — and, much appreciated. In a week, you could get exposed to a lot of natural building. As long as we coordinated carefully, we could see that you learned a lot in a weekend, as well. We are planning to start working on it about the first of May. It might be earlier if it warms up enough. It’s pretty hard to make cob when the clay is frozen…

As far as we have been able to find out, ours is the first earth bag home in Alaska. We do know a family that is building an Earth Ship structure near us, and there is a large intentional community that has a huge project they are doing each summer. I believe this year they will be doing earthen plastering. They might still have some light straw work to do, but I think it’s done. We know the members of that community quite well. We would be happy to introduce you to both groups.

I know one person that has built a cordwood home. And, I think I saw one on the way to Homer. Of course, there are log cabins everywhere…

I’m not aware of any classes, but we know a fellow in Homer that sometimes teaches about Rocket Mass Heaters. He has done a lot of research on them, and makes some very refined rocket heaters.

We’d love to have you join us, and we will do whatever we can to make it productive for you. We can provide nutritious vegetarian food, and rustic sleeping facilities, along with some nice philosophical discussions, a few laughs, a peaceful work environment, and maybe some Chi Gung. We’ll even give you permission to play in the mud!!! Oh, and for good measure, we’ll throw in a few mosquitoes….

If you are interested, let me know and we’ll figure out how to get in touch to give you more info and work out details.

        Dale

My husband and I are thinking about building a cob home in rural oklahoma. Does anyone know a contractor that works in the Tulsa area. Does anyone need help in the Tulsa area so we can gain hands on experience.

    • Haley says:

I am actually in the same boat. I’m pretty far from actually building my house but one of the reasons is because I know I need some experience too. When you get to where you’re ready to start I would love to come help. free labor anyways. I know some people in Muskogee and I’m near lake texhoma so it would be pretty easy for me to get there.

    • Hi Lisa,
We had some folks from Oklahoma come to one of our workshops in Central Kentucky. If you’ll send me some contact information, I’ll pass it on to them. They may be ready to start their project and need some help.

    Hi Garrett,
I’d be happy to help with your cob bench project. I’m close by in Portland. Shoot me an email at kentmccord@gmail.com. I used to be a high school teacher, but switched to construction a couple years ago. A small part of me misses being in the classroom and I think this would be fun.

  • Garrett Gunderson says:

    Hello Cob Workshops,

My name is Garrett Gunderson and my partner’s names are Tyler Tippetts and Megan Bailey. We are Juniors attending Union High School in Camas, Washington. For our Architecture class we are required to have a final project. We have decided to research, design, and build a cob-bench for our school campus. We have already begun research for our project, however we are having difficulties locating materials and other information. So we are looking for an advisor or mentor to guide us through our project who has experience in this area. Someone we could email, talk on the phone with or possibly Skype. Would you be interested in mentoring or assisting us in our project? If not, could you reccomend someone else? We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely, Garrett, Megan and Tyler

  • Dale says:

My wife and I (and, sometimes our youngest son) are building on our property in Alaska using all natural techniques and local materials from the property. We are finishing an earthbag/strawbale cabin with reticulated roofs (2 spiraling in opposite directions). The first roof is done, and we will be adding the second roof next season. It will be earth-bermed with earthen roofs, and will have light-straw insulation. It already has a cob rocket heater, and will have a cob bench for a thermal battery. We will continue to use natural building methods and materials as we continue our development. Everything we are doing is intended to blend into the land, and to minimize our impact upon the property. Anything we remove (tress, dirt, clay, etc.) for construction we are using in the construction.

Our work has stopped for the winter (it’s very hard to mix cob with frozen clay….), but we will be resuming work next summer, as soon as the ground thaws. This will probably be late April to early May. If anyone would like to join us on our adventure for a few days or a few weeks, we would be happy to talk with you. We will do all we can to provide a good educational experience in natural building methods, and are happy to share our vegetarian meals with you. We are also well-connected with a nearby macrobiotic-based intentional community that is doing a very large and sophisticated project using natural materials and methods, if you would like to experience them as well.

    • Amanda Thomas says:

      Hi Dale,

I’m curious about what part of Alaska you are in. We might consider an adventure up there if we can afford it.

      • Dale says:

        Hi, Amanda,

We’re on the Kenai Peninsula, which is about 60 miles South of Anchorage (a 20 minute flight or a beautiful 3 1-/2 hour drive). Our property is in an unincorporated area called Kasilof. It is on the highway between Soldotna and Homer (which is stunningly beautiful, and friendly).

There are some good prices right now on Alaska Airlines. Also, in the summer some of the discount airlines fly to Anchorage. Another option (and, a very fun, relaxing one) is to take the ferry up the Inside Passage. You can take it all the way to Seward, then a train to Anchorage, or you can load your car on board the ferry and get off in Haines or Skagway (or, Seward), and drive the rest of the way. The passengers who have the most fun bring a sleeping bag and sleep in a deck/lounge chair in the Solarium on the aft deck. This is a large area with clear roof, but otherwise it is open. It has heaters in the roof, which makes it a wonderfully refreshing place to sleep or lounge. They even have an area for pitching tents! We took the trip last summer and had an absolutely wonderful time! If you want to do it, though, book early! It fills up fast.

Have you been to Alaska before? What questions can I answer for you?
        Dale

  • Tabitha Baker says:

Single mom totally interested in fashioning a cob home for myself and sons. No previous experience but wondering if there are affordable groups who do build cob homes?

    • Dale says:

      Hi, Tabitha,

We don’t do a lot of cob buildings in Alaska, but interest in cob is definitely growing, and there are several projects I know of that use cob in their construction (ours included). Alternative and natural building is done a lot here. There is a long history of log cabins here, but there is a growing interest in earthen construction of several varieties.

Earthen construction is very affordable, and doable by a family or small group. You are trading your time and labor for affordability. If that is okay with you, then you will be embarking on a fascinating and rewarding adventure!

Email me if you want any contact information for the Alaska projects that I am aware of.

  • Would like to do work exchange, but will talk about other options. I will call you next week? want to stay for a good time period.

  • Alexandra Corless says:

Hi, my name is Alexandra Corless and I am building a Cob house. The build is in Molalla Oregon, an hour SE of Portland Oregon. We are building a 1000 square foot cob home on a 5 acre property that already has a house and a yurt on the land. We understand that this is a huge build and we are curious if anyone is interested in building with us.

Currently we have all trenches dug, drainage pipe in, drainage rock tamped and currently building the rock wall. We are really at the beginning stages of the rock wall build. I am not sure we will be able to get to the COB portion of our build this year before the rains, there is only two of us building, but next year I would love our build to be available for anyone who would like to work with us that are in the area.

I currently have every weekend in September available if anyone is interested in building a rock wall this year. We are using most stones from our land and a mortar. I am very open to dates for next year if you would like to organize a party with me or use our build as a workshop.

There is plenty of camping space available on the property and a bathroom as well. I could also rent a porta-potty. We have two 75 foot gardens with beautiful fresh organic food available to builders.
I am sure I will post again in the future when dates have been solidified if I get any responses.

Thank you for considering my build and I appreciate any information you send my way. Please contact me if you have any questions! I am happy to discuss this more by phone or other means of communication 🙂

      Hi….
I am exploring ideas on how to build my home. I am not a spry 20 yo, but I have been sculpting my entire life and can stomp mud with the best of them.

If you will consider my leg-skills and sculpting experience valuable, I will be delighted to hear what you have learned so far. I also would like to commit to at least a two week stretch of time on your build, after the rains let up and you begin again.

      Please keep me posted!
      Blessings,

      • Dale says:

        Deborah,

We are not 20 yo’s either. I am a retired executive, and my wife is a textile artist (angelworkdesigns.com). We are successfully completing an earthen structure in Alaska. With the exception of a little help we have had with some heavy lifting (logs for roof), etc., we have done all the work ourselves. As I stated in a different post, we are using a number of natural building methods: cob, earthbags, strawbale, light straw, etc.). So, I would encourage you to explore the variety of methods, and to pursue whatever becomes your dream!

BTW, your work is amazing and beautiful! I love your dragons. Our property is named “Twin Dragons”, because there are two dragons on it. And, the little cabin we are finishing is called the “Dragon’s Nest”.

    • Terry Czerwonka says:

      Hi Alexandra!

My roommate Jon and I would be very interested in coming down and helping you to build with cob. We would like to build our own cob house someday. At the moment we don’t have any experience but would love to come help in any way we can. We’re available weekends this year or next year, just let us know! Not sure how your weather is holding there in Oregon. We are right around Tacoma, Washington and so far the weather has been staying beautiful

      Hi Alexandra,

My partner and I live in SE Portland and are really looking for hands on cob experience! We’ve been reading books, watching videos, etc., and are going to a work party at the Cob Cottage company in Coquille in the next month or so, and will likely be experimenting with a cob bench in our yard for the time being. Our eventual plan is to build our own house. Since you live so close by, we would love to help you build for the sake of gaining some knowledge and experience. One of our roommates would be interested in coming too, and we could probably round up extra hands if you need them. If you are interested, please let us know! Thanks.

      Hi Alexandra,
I realize this was posted last year but – I would love to come help out on your cob home project. I’m trying to get some hands on experience with cob and I already have some rock wall building experience. I’m located in Portland and free most Fridays and Saturdays, all day. Feel free to email me at kavi.xiu@gmail.com if you’d like an extra hand!

We are looking for someone who wants to learn about cob building who would like to stay in a cob cottage that is not-quite done but has a roof and a loft in which to sleep and homegrown and local organic food in exchange. We have a large cottage that is almost done and a small cottage that is in the beginning phases to work on. We have a large organic garden, hens and turkeys, a cat a dog, and two children. Must like a farm-like atmosphere and children (6 and 2). We are located in paradise–halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey with beautiful autumns and warm winters. You can email me at terryellis3@juno.com and we can discuss a live/work balance that works for both of us. Blessings!

      I forgot to say California!

    • Deborah says:

      Hey Terry…I’m potentially in.
Caveat: I am available after the first of the year.

I am located in So Ca and eager to learn cob and hope to eventually build my own. I am even considering the area between SC and SF. So your build is mighty interesting to me.

Please contact me with details of your build and such.

      Looking forward to more conversation,
      Deborah

    Hi Diane!
I am interested in attending your Ground Up workshop early October and would love to help out on the farm as a work trade! I’m located in Brooklyn but, could be available either the week before or the week after to set up or clean up. I have a background in construction/sculpture, experience on a farm and an interest in natural building techniques! Do you still have a openings for work trade?
    All best,
    Amanda

    • Yes Amanda,
We have a couple of spots still open. I will be out of town until Monday afternoon. Please send your phone number through the contact us form on our website, and I will call early next week.
      Thanks ~ Diane

  • We are a Natural Building School in Central Kentucky. As much as is reasonably possible, we try to prepare you to be able to go home and build your home after attending a week long workshop with us. We are looking for a few folks to help out a week before our most popular workshop, “From the Ground Up with Cob,” which is coming up October 1st thru 5th and will include:
    Natural Stone Foundation,
    Building Cob Walls
    Sculptural ~ Artistic Cob
    Natural Plaster / Lime Plaster
The work trade is a week of work getting ready for the workshop, in exchange for registration to the workshop the next week. Please see our web site for more information, and call me or contact me through our web site if you would like to get more information.
    Regards,

      • Hello Anita,
Thank you for your interest in Disputanta Cob. We just finished our last ‘official’ workshop of the year, October 1-5, 2014, “From the Ground Up with Cob.” Our next workshop will be in the spring, but we do not have dates yet. We will be looking for work trades at that time. We will be starting from the ground up on two of the walls for an 18th Century Community Kitchen we are building out of cob.
