A Complete Introduction to Earthen Building Techniques (Cob, Slip Straw, Wattle and Daub, Timber Framing)
August 14, 2021 ∞ 4:00 pm - August 21, 2021 ∞ 9:00 am
$600Come and experience our small natural building community in the cloud forests of El Salvador´s highest mountain!
This workshop is being hosted by the Clouds of El Pital Eco-Tourism Collective. Our collective of five rural families from El Salvador has collectively built eight separate cob houses and cabins to host tourists in the beautiful El Trifinio Biosphere on the slopes of El Salvador´s highest mountain. The nearby cloud forest offers a beautiful site to learn about natural building techniques, permaculture, and sustainable living. Besides the actual building workshop, you will also be staying on a beautiful permaculture farm presenting the opportunity to learn about regenerative homesteading.
During this workshop, we will be building a beautiful restaurant for our eco-tourism collective in a beautiful pine and cedar forest. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and learn about all aspects of the building process, from rubble trenches and rock foundations, building cob, slip straw, wattle and daub, and cordwood walls, timber framing with cedar roundwood poles, installing doors and windows, plastering, and more.
This workshop offers you the opportunity to see several different earthen-built structures in different phases of construction. Besides staying in beautifully furnished cob and timber-framed cabins with fantastic views of El Salvador´s highest mountain, you will also have plenty of hands-on experience to learn a wide variety of natural building techniques.
The six full-day workshop costs $600 USD, and includes:
- 7 nights of lodging in private cob cabins (check out the AirBnb links below to see where you´ll be staying)
- 3 locally-harvested meals a day
- All the coffee or tea you can drink
- Private, shuttle transportation to/from the Salvadoran Airport
- The workshop learning experience
- Several free e-books on cob and natural building
- A half-day hiking trip to visit the mystical cloud forest
- We will also be visiting all of the cob structures that have been built in our community (over ten homes/cabins built by 5 families) to see how natural building positively impacts local communities.
While El Salvador receives lots of negative media attention due to violence, we are located in one of the safest parts of the country that receives a large influx of tourists. Furthermore, we are a tight knit community of small farmers that enjoy having people come and visit as guests.
